After two decades of mentorship, Communication Disorders Department Chair retires

With a warm sendoff full of hugs and shared memories from friends and colleagues, Dr. Jessica Bonner retired from her role as Department Chair of Communication Disorders at Governors State University (GovState) after serving the University for 24 years.
Rising from Assistant Professor to Department Chair, Dr. Bonner spent 17 years of her tenure teaching, advising undergraduate and graduate students, and supervising graduate students in clinical practicum.
She’s made a lasting impression on many students, including one who recalls Dr. Bonner’s support during a tough time.
“Dr. Bonner is a wealth of knowledge, and it has been a privilege to learn from such a knowledgeable and selfless individual,” said Jane Neidy, a former student and graduate assistant in the Department of Communication Disorders. “I was able to receive one-on-one tutoring from Dr. Bonner, which she offered personally, when I was struggling in a course and feeling defeated. She welcomed me into her office, providing a safe space for me to ask questions and learn with no judgment. She will certainly be missed as our department chair.”
Expressing similar sentiments, Catharine Balthzar, Dean of the College of Health and Human Services (CHHS), fondly recalled when she started working at GovState alongside Dr. Bonner.
“Jessica and I started about the same time, with sons the same age, and we have watched our families grow from backyard birthday parties to high school and college graduations,” said Dean Balthazar. “She has been a trusted friend as well as colleague for 25 years.”
In her role as department chair, Dr. Bonner mentored and managed faculty and staff in addition to students. She also coordinated and led a successful re-accreditation, as well as managed an Interdisciplinary Stroke Support Group, efforts that haven’t gone unnoticed by her colleagues.
“She led the Master’s program through reaccreditation, recruited and supported the success of faculty, and built impactful clinical and co-curricular experiences for students,” said Dean Balthazar. “We will miss her energy, focus, grace, and expertise.”
Though Dr. Bonner is retiring, she plans to remain engaged with the GovState community.
