Accounting professor Chevonne Alston appointed to Illinois Board of Examiners

Making an impact beyond the classroom, Dr. Chevonne Alston, Associate Professor of Accounting at Governors State University (GovState), was recently appointed to the Illinois Board of Examiners (ILBOE), which assists Certified Public Accountant (CPA) candidates navigate the licensure process.
As a member of the board, Dr. Alston is also a member of the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA). This includes the nation’s 55 State Boards of Accountancy that administer the Uniform CPA Examination and regulate the practice of public accountancy in the United States.
“Illinois is unique in that we are the only state without a Board of Accountancy,” added Dr. Alston. “Illinois Accounting regulatory structure includes the Illinois Board of Examiners that oversees the administration of the CPA Exam, and the Illinois Department of Financial & Professional Regulation is responsible for CPA licensure and enforcement.”
In her three-year term, Dr. Alston will attend quarterly meetings where the Board will address legislation and process changes, review the results of Illinois CPA candidates by exam section, and address other items as needed. The board also works with the Illinois CPA Society on an Educational Conference annually.
This appointment is meaningful to Dr. Alston as she looks forward to bringing her experience to her new roles.
“I am honored to serve on the Illinois Board of Examiners and the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy,” said Dr. Alston. “As a CPA who has seen the profession working in public practice and now in academia, I am proud to have a seat at the table and be a voice in the conversation during this time of transition as new requirements and paths to licensure will be effective January 1, 2027 (HB2459).”
