In anticipation of the new semester, the undergraduate and graduate advisors of Governors State University (GovState) gathered for an academic advising retreat this summer.

“It was nice to have everyone step away from their desks and engage in meaningful conversations around topics that are central to our everyday work,” said Kerri O’Shea, Senior Academic Advisor at GovState.

Focused on professional development and collaboration, the retreat was facilitated by Corban Megumi Sánchez from DePaul University. Sánchez has over 23 years of experience in higher education, helping students navigate their academic and personal journeys.

During the retreat, participants engaged in interactive workshops on a variety of topics, like team building, active listening and empathy, inclusive advising practices, and conflict resolution.

We discussed our shared humanity, giving grace to build morale, trauma-informed advising approaches, reframing conversations for positive conflict resolution, and compassionate student service,” said Stefany Sigler, Graduate Advisor for the Division of Arts and Letters at GovState.

For Sigler, the retreat offered valuable insight that could benefit advising sessions.

“Overall, it was a very affirming and validating session that gave us a chance to share our experiences and learn how to lead with empathy in our roles,” said Sigler. “I enjoyed the scripts and perspectives shared and believe they will invite deeper and more meaningful dialogue in advising sessions.

O’Shea also enjoyed the experience. “I’m passionate about professional development, and I really value events like this for career growth and connection.”

With the fall semester underway, GovState’s advisors look forward to meeting with students to guide them on their academic journey.
