Governors State University (GSU) will welcome new and returning Jaguars back to campus Aug. 29 with free food, giveaways, a magic show, a film festival and other activities during Welcome Week.

The campus tradition is an opportunity for students “ to get acclimated with campus resources, meet other like-minded new and returning students, and interact with various faculty and staff members,” said Dr. Konya Sledge, Interim Director for the Center of Student Engagement and Intercultural Programs (CSEIP).  “It's designed to allow students an opportunity to learn and grow and serves as a great opportunity for students to connect to the university and make academic and social connections.”

Here are a few Welcome Week events that’ll help you get into the Jaguar Spirit:

-         Aug. 29: Students can stop by the Jaguar Den for an open house to learn how they can get involved outside the classroom, meet CSEIP staff and enjoy lunch and giveaways.

-         Aug. 30: Make your way down to Sherman Hall for a free performance from national magician, Kid Ace the Illusionist, who has performed his bizarre tricks for the likes of Kelly Clarkson and Steve Harvey.

-         Aug. 31: Learn about job opportunities at the Student Employment Fair in the Hall of Governors.

-         Sept. 1: Watch some of the best short films from the 2021 Chicago Southland International Film Festival competition. Free pizza and beverages will be provided.

-         Sept. 2: End the week of class with a party at the Welcome Back Bash in the E-Lounge.
