Elevating careers in tech with Earthrise Energy Jaguar STARS Drone Training Program

Aspiring drone pilots can soon become FAA-certified with the Earthrise Energy Jaguar STARS Drone Training Program at Governors State University (GovState).

With five mandatory training dates, the program offered by the School of Extended Learning (SXL) includes Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) 107 prep, cinematic, and thermal flight courses. Successful completion of the training grants participants a voucher to take the official FAA Part 107 exam through GovState’s Testing Center.

Program graduates can expect to walk away with a dual skill set in creative drone operation and technical industrial inspection, valuable expertise to navigate employment opportunities. Eligible graduates will receive a drone upon completion.

The Jaguar STARS program, an acronym for Solar Training in Aerial Robotics and Systems, is for Will County residents.

Lifelong learning for retirees with The Knowledge Exchange program

Continuing education is for all ages, which The Knowledge Exchange (TKE) at Governors State University (GovState) puts into practice with its lifelong learning program.

Designed for the retired and semi-retired, TKE, a program in GovState’s School of Extended Learning (SXL), offers full-length courses, workshops and presentations in eight-week sessions held in fall, winter, and spring with meetings on Fridays. This program is the only one of its kind in the Chicago Southland.

For some, it may be a chance to make new connections or reconnect with familiar faces.

“The 2025-26 academic year is 64 years since my first year of teaching at Governors State University (1961-62),” said Ron Small, former GovState faculty and TKE Volunteer Class Leader. “Eve Duray, who is currently in my Knowledge Exchange music class, was one of my first students in my music class 64 years ago. I’m honored to have her back in a lifelong learning capacity.”

For others, these opportunities bring more joy to their retirement.

“Thank you for creating spaces and making opportunities like this possible for my Dad,” shared Nicole Beeson. “Going to TKE classes is happiest he has been in a long time!”

The courses are non-credit and led by a team of dedicated volunteers made up of GovState faculty, alumni and community experts. Suzanne Patterson, External Program Manager, has taught a Cinema Studies class for the program for 21 years and has managed the program for 15 years.

In addition to cinema studies, class topics change by session and can include history, law, liberal arts, current events, foreign policy, music/film, philosophy and more.

While each class offers a chance for lively discussion among peers, participants can continue discussions and share life experiences at lunch to get to know other TKE students.

Just last academic year, 276 individuals participated in various courses, field trips, and live musical performances through the TKE program.

A couple of past students, Barbara and Rodney Campbell, enjoyed their experience and are grateful for the program.

“Thank you for all your efforts to present classes that cause all of us to grow as we age. The Knowledge Exchange is a great asset to the campus and south suburbs.”

Clean Energy Jobs Training Program opens career pathways

Something as simple as clicking on a Facebook ad introduced Krystle to a new journey and career path in clean energy, which she hadn’t considered before joining the Clean Energy Jobs Training Program (CEJA). The program provides free training in clean energy pathways, barrier reduction services, and paid stipends while attending classes.

In partnership with Joliet Junior College (JJC), Governors State University’s (GovState) School of Extended Learning (SXL) is providing pre-courses to introduce students to clean energy jobs and prepare them for further training in different careers, like HVAC (heating, venting, and air conditioning) which Krystle chose.

“This program provided me with new skill sets and certifications, and I received help with gaining new employment,” said Krystle, who was placed in a daytime job while attending evening classes at JJC. “Most importantly for me was the ability to complete my college education. That alone is what attracted me to this program, but I’ve received so much more.”

Krystle was part of the program’s first cohort, which had 10 graduates last fall. Two advanced into the HVAC program at JJC, four entered the EV Installation and Charging Station program at JJC, and four are actively searching for jobs in clean energy and related fields with the help of the program’s staff.

The team even helped Krystle when she faced financial barriers, allowing her to keep pursuing her new path in HVAC.

“I received way more than what I bargained for, and I couldn’t be more grateful for this program and the team who helps run it!” she shared. “I’m very appreciative and I hope they can continue to help others like myself!”

In addition to HVAC, The CEJA program offers training pathways for the following careers: electrical vehicle technician, residential energy auditor, and EV charging station installation.

The Clean Jobs Workforce program is aimed at individuals 18+, prioritizing those living in R3 or Environmental Justice Communities – areas impacted by pollution, economic hardship, or underinvestment. Displaced energy workers, foster care members/graduates, and individuals facing other employment barriers may also be eligible.

Learning life skills one Jaguar Jump at a time

Not every lesson is learned in a classroom – something the latest cohort of Jaguar Jumps (JJ) students at Governors State University (GovState) know from experience.

This semester, the JJ cohort, the largest in the program’s history at 24 students, went on a daylong trip to practice their independence, express their creativity, and build bonds. These skills are just some of many that are addressed in the bridge program which guides students with disabilities during the transition from high school to college and career pathways.

Starting at a Pace bus stop, the students learned to navigate public transit to get to their destination, Park Forest’s SouthWorks MakerLab, a partner in the GovState School of Extended Learning (SXL) network.

After diving into the world of 3D printing, where the group were able to create and design their own custom pieces, the JJ students visited Mr. Franklin’s MuzicNet School of Music to meet other student musicians on the autism spectrum. They all banded together to put on their own mini concert.

Trips like these provide the JJ students an opportunity to foster practical skills, engage with technology, and build community, something that left a lasting impression on one of the attendees, Julian Johnson (pictured right).

“In Jaguar Jumps, I made a friend, and learned how to take the train in the city. My Jaguar Jumps friends also have attended my band’s performance,” said Julian.

Julian is one of many mentors for the JJ program, students who have completed the bridge program and are now on their chosen college or career path. Julian, a GovState Accounting major, is a published author, a jazz trombonist, and a member of the Student Advisory Board.

Abbey Scott is in her final year at Trinity in their art therapy program. She’s transformed her experience with cerebral palsy into a mission to serve. Her hands-on leadership in the Heroes and Hopes Garden—a collaborative project between veterans and Jaguar Jumpers—teaches the invaluable lesson of giving back.

Elijah, a future sports anchor, inspires others with his unwavering focus. A Communication major, he hones his craft in GovState’s Digital Media Studio. As a mentor, Elijah’s optimism encourages others to keep pursuing their dreams, no matter how big.

Phil, whose journey began with quiet determination, discovered his purpose in a connection with another student, Mary Kate. His innate ability to understand her dysarthric speech led to him becoming her state-funded personal assistant through IDHS. Today, he balances three jobs with a newfound confidence, proving that profound opportunities can arise from simple acts of kindness.

The fall semester for JJ students wraps on December 3 with their end of the semester party. JJ students will showcase their goals and accomplishments on poster boards. The party runs from 4:30 - 6 p.m. and all are invited to celebrate with them!

Building pathways through training and education

The Calumet Area Industrial Commission (CAIC), with support from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO), launched the Job Training and Economic Development (JTED) program to address critical manufacturing workforce shortages.

In partnership with Governors State University’s (GovState) School of Extended Learning and Prairie State College’s Workforce Development and Community Education, the program provides hands-on training, career readiness preparation, and classroom instruction designed to open doors for residents of Chicago’s South Side and the southern suburbs.

Prairie State College delivered core instruction in safety training, applied math, and blueprint reading, while GovState offered CNC fundamentals and supply chain coursework. Together, these complementary skills equipped participants with the technical knowledge and problem-solving ability required in modern manufacturing.

One standout graduate is Apollo Jones, Jr. (pictured right), a South Side native and Alabama A&M mechanical engineering graduate. After discovering the program through his grandmother, Apollo enrolled and—through a mix of GovState-led coursework, Prairie State training, employer tours, and work-based learning—secured a position as a Manufacturing Engineering Technician at IMI Bimba Manufacturing in University Park.

“I was looking for jobs in manufacturing, and this program gave me both career readiness and exposure to areas like machining that built on what I learned at the university,” said Jones. “This program helped me get back on track. Now I have a full-time job and a future in manufacturing.”

Gaining confidence through an apprenticeship program

Currently thriving in his role as a Planner I at Federal Signal in University Park, Eric Belitz is grateful for the Registered Apprenticeship Program at Governors State University (GovState) that elevated his skillset.

Through a combination of structured classroom learning and hands-on experience in the Production, Planning, and Expediting Clerk program, Belitz gained critical skills that directly aligned with his day-to-day responsibilities.

In his role at Federal Signal, a leader in safety and security products, Belitz supports different production lines, as well as service parts. Some of his responsibilities include maintaining and scheduling production orders to meet demand requirements, verifying material availability, and identifying any issues that may impact future production.

Belitz’s supervisor, Erich Hammons, Director of Manufacturing, noticed the program’s impact.

“Once Eric made the decision to join the apprenticeship, I watched him grow exponentially and gain confidence,” said Hammons. “I would recommend this training for anyone interested in a planner/scheduler role.”

Reflecting on his journey, Belitz shared that both the classroom instruction and on-the-job training were equally valuable in supporting his professional growth. He praised the program’s instructors for their excellent teaching style, real-world expertise, and strong support, noting that the insights they offered often went beyond what was covered in the curriculum.

“The content for the course is curated deliberately and is focused on bringing you current and relevant information,” said Belitz. “I was really impressed with the level of difficulty and the direction of the content provided. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking to advance their career.”

For future apprentices, Belitz’s advice is to stay curious, ask questions, and revisit earlier material as new lessons build upon previous knowledge. “I seemed to benefit from taking a look at previous sections after learning something new to develop new insights,” he explained.

“Eric’s success demonstrates what’s possible when education and industry work hand-in-hand to develop talent,” said Craig Schmidt, Executive Director of the School of Extended Learning at GovState. “Apprenticeships like this not only prepare individuals for in-demand jobs—they strengthen our regional economy by supporting the needs of local employers.”

Belitz’s story shows how earn-and-learn models like registered apprenticeships provide meaningful pathways for career advancement while building a stronger, more resilient workforce.

School of Extended Learning releases Annual Report

Governors State University’s (GovState) School of Extended Learning (SXL) recently released its Annual Report, highlighting some of its achievements from the 2023 – 2024 academic year.

SXL served 6,028 individuals! The School of Extended Learning wrapped up its 2023–2024 year, serving 1,783 individuals through programs including continuing education, industry credentials, employee training, Jaguar Jumps, TKE, conferences, youth programs, and school district partnerships. SXL’s Testing Center conducted 4,245 exams for industry credentials and GovState students.

Notable mentions from the report include launching the first pilot training program in partnership with D14 Aviation in the spring of 2024, with 26 individuals enrolled.

SXL also provided training to training for 78 employees of regional companies in areas such as Lean Six Sigma, Certified Operations Leader, Master Leader, Drones, and PHR/SPHR Certification Preparation Course.

As a result of grant funding, 228 low-income individuals received training that enabled them to earn increased wages in careers in healthcare, manufacturing, and education.

Throughout the year, hundreds of individuals were reached by SXL staff representing GovState at local events and committees, hosting events and information sessions, and their work connecting high school students to careers.

GovState seeking to empower next generation of professionals in clean energy

Governors State University's (GovState) School of Extended Learning (SXL) is seeking individuals interested in empowering the next generation of skilled professionals.

To support SXL's latest initiative, passionate instructors are needed for courses in Electrical Basics, Construction Basics, Building Energy Basics, Safety Basics, Energy & Sustainability Basics, Introduction to Clean Energy Careers, and Workplace Readiness.

With the recent $3 million grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO), GovState's SXL will support training and education opportunities as part of the Climate and Equitable Jobs ACT (CEJA) grant.

Joliet Junior College (JJC) received the grant to implement the Clean Jobs Workforce Network Program for Will County residents and the surrounding region.

According to SXL Executive Director Craig Schmidt, this is one of many partnerships GovState shares with JJC.

"GovState plays an important role in the CEJA grant by helping people get ready for clean energy jobs. Through training, supporting fairness, and working with others, we are not just helping people find good jobs, we are also helping communities succeed as we move toward a greener future,” he said.

The 12-week bridge program that prepares individuals to enter a clean energy training program will be held on campus at GovState in Spring 2025.

Southworks Engineering and Robotics returns to GovState

With a shared goal to inspire the next generation to pursue a career in manufacturing and STEM, Governors State University’s (GovState) School of Extended Learning (SXL) partnered with Southworks for another year in a row to kick off the engineering and robotics program, powered by Amazon.

On February 12, GovState will facilitate a Robotics Showcase and Practice on campus where teams of high school students will present their robots, participate in workshops, and receive feedback from educators and manufacturing professors.

The showcase follows the 7th annual Southworks engineering and robotics meet and greet from early in the year, where over 200 high school students from 17 schools gathered for engaging roundtable discussions about possible career pathways and the skills needed for the evolving manufacturing field.

“Events like GovState's Meet and Greet are invaluable because they bridge the gap between high school students and local employers, opening doors to career opportunities right in their own communities,” said Craig Schmidt, Executive Director of SXL. “By connecting young talent with industry leaders, we empower the next generation with the knowledge, resources, and networks needed to build successful futures.”

Those interested in manufacturing and STEM may find themselves pursuing careers as mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, computer programmers, or statisticians amongst other pathways.

Taking the Southworks program to the next level, the 7^th Annual Engineering & Robotics Competition Olympics brings teams head-to-head in various activities, like Maze Runner, Catapult, SUMO, and Pathfinder challenges.

“GovState is proud to support the upcoming high school robotics and drone competitions, where innovation, creativity, and technical skills take center stage,” said Schmidt. “These events inspire the next generation of problem-solvers and engineers, providing hands-on experience that prepares students for the evolving workforce. By fostering STEM education and real-world applications, we’re investing in the future of our community and its young talent.”

International Education Week spans November 18-22 and Governors State University’s (GovState) School of Extended Learning (SXL) is highlighting the growth opportunities for those mentoring the next generation of learners.

Whether a beginning teacher or an administrator seeking mentors, SXL offers all educators the chance to connect with others over best practices, resilience training, cultural competency, English Language learning workshops, and more.

There are four program options: New Leaders Mentor Program, Beginning Teacher Program, English Language Training for Parents, and Spanish Language Classes for Teachers and Administrators.

For new leaders looking for guidance, the New Leaders Mentor Program offers 50 hours of one-on-one collaboration and assistance throughout the school year and monthly professional development, including one Administrative Academy Course per year. Mentorship comes from experienced individuals who worked in school districts across the South suburbs.

Anyone in the early stages of teaching can look to the Beginning Teacher Program for support throughout their first and second years of teaching. This includes insightful training activities for new teachers and their selected mentors, ongoing professional development, and mentorship from experienced teachers within the school district.

If language training is needed, both English and Spanish courses are available. Both offer flexible scheduling with a customizable curriculum based on the needs of the course participants.

GovState's aviation courses taking people to new heights

Soaring to new heights isn’t limited to high school graduates with Governors State University’s (GovState) aviation courses.

From planes to drones, anyone 16 years and older with a passion for flight can register for a course to learn how to operate their choice of aircraft.

Partnering with D14 Aviation, GovState's School of Extended Learning (SXL) now offers pilot training with a “start anytime” option. This means aspiring pilots can enroll for flight training on their schedule, which can be beneficial for those still in high school looking to get started on this training while still in school.

There’s more to the course than flight time. Students are introduced to the foundational knowledge of safe and effective piloting, covering topics ranging from aerodynamics, communications procedures, weather, navigation, and more.

On the other side of aviation, GovState also offers drone courses, with sessions scheduled for this fall. Open to those with or without experience flying drones, the courses cover basic flight controls to tips to get the best photos and footage.

Jaguar Jumps STEAMs ahead

Over the summer, Jaguar Jumps (JJ) hosted a STEAM Camp at Governors State University (GovState) full of fun activities mixed with life skills.

It was a day-long affair for JJ students who engaged in different tasks that offered chances to practice their fine motor skills and community building, while gaining valuable knowledge to aid them in daily life.

The day started out with students getting crafty in the kitchen baking cookies, making muffin mix jars, personalizing kitchen aprons, and creating mosaics. From the kitchen to home maintenance, it was all about improving their ADL (activities of daily life) skills.

Mixing batter and baking cookies honed the students measuring and sorting skills, opening the door for potential employment in food service, while creating mosaics introduced them to arranging tiles with glue and grout, skills needed for tiling projects or window glazing.

Once everyone finished their projects, the group went on a trip around GovState’s campus with polaroid cameras in hand to take pictures of each location they found as they worked on their directionality and mobility skills.

Tasked with finding the art gallery, recreation center, and a mural on campus, the JJ students were treated to unplanned surprises at each stop.

First stop: the art gallery. An artist show opening was underway, so the students were able to meet the artist and talk with her while learning about their favorite exhibits.

Continuing with their photo hunt, the students went to the recreation center only to find that the GovState basketball team was practicing ahead of the fall season. Despite that, the team took time to chat with the JJ students, even taking photos and encouraging them to attend some upcoming games.

Closing out their photo tour and the camp, the students took group photos at the campus mural where they found Officer Kelley on patrol, who not only engaged them in conversation, but also joined their photo session.

Teen's passion for aviation soars with GovState and D14’s program

In a world where finding the right fit for education can be a challenge, one teenager's journey to pursue his passion for aviation has taken flight in unexpected ways, bringing him to Governors State University (GovState).

At a local counseling center, 17-year-old Miguel stumbled upon a program that he initially thought would just be "fun," but it turned out to be a life-changing experience. Miguel quickly realized the program's potential to pave the way for his future career aspirations. "I think I have a lot of experience for a career if I want to pursue aviation in the future," he says.

Miguel learned to fly and gained invaluable insights into the world of aviation. His school district 205 partnered with GovState’s School of Extended Learning/ D14 Aviation Program to provide the opportunity for Miguel.

"I want to be a cargo pilot. If I can't be a cargo pilot, I want to do crop dusting because I have some family in Kentucky that have fields," he explains.

With a few hours logged in his pilot's logbook, Miguel has already gained valuable experience. "I was taught how to take the plane out and to land the plane. I've only flown a little bit, but [I have] about like 3 or 4 hours," he shares eagerly.

Supporting Miguel every step of the way is his mom, who beams with pride as she reflects on her son's journey. "He's very smart, and he did need something that actually would keep his attention and keep him interested, and this was it," she says.

As a single mother, she acknowledges the challenges but is grateful for the positive impact the program has had on Miguel. "Now, he just keeps pursuing this, and it's just something that keeps him busy and, you know, keeps him out of trouble," she shares. “Gotta keep the boys out of trouble.”

Reflecting on Miguel's journey from childhood to adolescence, his mom remembers his early fascination with aviation. "In school, like every year he had to do presentations, he chose the Wright brothers," she says, amazed. “I didn't think that he would ever be able to do something like this.”

As the conversation turns to Miguel's younger brother, his mom muses about the possibility of him following in his brother's footsteps. "That would be great, right?" she says with a smile.

Amid Miguel's soaring aspirations, there's a quiet observer—his little brother, 15-year-old Cruz. Just a few years younger, Cruz looks up to Miguel, inspired by his brother's passion for aviation.

While Cruz may not fully grasp the complexities of aviation just yet, his admiration for Miguel is palpable. "My big brother is really cool. He's learning how to fly planes," says Cruz.

With dreams of one day joining his brother in the sky, Cruz listens to Miguel's stories of flying adventures and eagerly awaits the day when he can follow in his brother's footsteps. As Miguel's passion for aviation continues to inspire those around him, Cruz stands as a testament to the power of dreams and the impact of familial support. Together, they navigate the skies of ambition, each fueled by the other's unwavering belief in their potential.

A graduate journey: The highs and lows

From student to alumni to Governors State University (GovState) employee, Kevin Shane (’20) has been through a journey of highs and lows since graduating with his bachelor’s in Computer Science.

While he was a student, Shane could be found delivering interoffice mail and packages around campus for the Procurement and Business Services department. His graduation came at the onset of the pandemic.

“I did my senior project and graduated during the pandemic, which was tough,” said Shane. “I never got to have the traditional celebration graduates get in the spring.”

Several months after graduation, amidst a world of uncertainty, Shane landed his first tech job as a database developer at Enverus.

“Getting my first job as a database developer was my first taste of having a career, being paid like an adult, and overall enjoying my work,” said Shane.

Unfortunately, about a year after he started, Shane was laid off in December 2022. Despite being told otherwise, he couldn’t help but feel like he had done something to lead to this outcome.

Once again, Shane found himself looking for a job. “I applied and interviewed for countless positions, but nothing landed,” said Shane.

As the lengthy job search wore on Shane, he eventually applied for unemployment and quickly reached out to GovState’s Employment and Employer Services (EES) for additional career training.

His EES career coach, Sabrina Shine, and Program Director of the School of Extended Learning (SXL), Michelle Sebasco, helped secure funding for Shane to get further training in CompTIA Network+, Security+.

“I signed up for two CompTIA certifications in SXL with Michelle,” said Shane. “Studying for those certificates prepared me to interview for the information security position I hold at GovState today.”

Now back at GovState as an Information Security Analyst, Shane is thankful for his wife and all the support she offered him to keep him levelheaded throughout his journey.

“At this point, outside of being a student, I’ve worked at GovState a total of three times. It’s like being around family,” said Shane.

For others facing challenges, Shane has some words of advice.

“Progress has some struggle attached,” he said. “Taking things one day at a time really helps. Setting small daily goals helps with consistency. Taking walks or bike riding really helped to clear my mind during tougher days.”

Next on Shane’s list? Taking a Master Information Technology course in 2025 to keep honing his skills.

Ready for takeoff: GovState's new pilot training program

In a move to ready more licensed airplane pilots for takeoff, Governors State University (GovState) is partnering with D14 Aviation to launch a new pilot licensure training program.

The non-credit course offered by the School of Extended Learning (SXL) begins with a private pilot license requiring 90-hours of classroom work at GovState and successfully passing 40 hours of flight time with an instructor at Bult Field in Monee, Illinois. From there, students can move to a commercial pilot license by taking additional courses and flying time.

SXL Executive Director Craig Schmidt said the private pilot course will provide students with the foundational knowledge for safe and effective piloting and cover theoretical aspects of aviation, including aerodynamics, navigation, meteorology, and regulations amongst other essential topics.

According to Schmidt, the course hits three objectives:

“First, we want to provide an alternative option to achieve a pilot’s license without having to secure a 4-year-degree. Second, this aligns with GovState’s focus to provide industry training and industry credentials that lead to good paying jobs, and third this supports GovState’s Supply Chain Innovation Center and Business Incubator (SCICBI), whose work focuses on the movement of cargo via aviation mobility.”

“We are excited to bring this training to the Chicago Southland region as it complements our drone training and puts GovState at the forefront of the supply chain sector,” said Schmidt.

School of Extended Learning sponsors drone and robotics competitions

Gearing up to reach new heights, Governors State University's (GovState) School of Extended Learning (SXL) is sponsoring two competitions this year, one for drones and one for robotics, as part of their year-long program, funded by Amazon, that connects high school students with career pathways involved with drones, robotics, computer science, manufacturing, and supply chain.

To kick off this program, SXL held a meet and greet in GovState's Hall of Governors ahead of both competitions for employers to not only learn about the events, but also meet with students to share career opportunities and advice on self-presentation for job opportunities.

“It is great to see the involvement from our local employers to connect with young individuals and talk about the career paths available right here in the Chicago Southland region,” said Craig Schmidt, Executive Director of SXL.

Reggie Greenwood, Director of Supply Chain Innovation Center and Business Incubator, added that it strengthens GovState's role in the region. “This networking event helps build knowledge about the leadership role that GovState is playing in our region,” said Greenwood.

The first event, Rich Township Aerial Drone Competition Tournament, took place early February with 20 teams from the North Central region of the United States competing in events that tested their pilot skills, autonomous flight skills and teamwork.

The second event, Southworks Robotics Olympics, is set to take place later in the spring on April 20 at South Suburban College. This event seeks to foster the growing interest in robotics and engineering by hosting healthy competitions between schools across Illinois. Teams' robots will compete in various events that include navigating mazes, launching catapults, and battling in sumo matches.

GovState's Craig Schmidt joins Illinois Workforce Innovation Board

Craig Schmidt, Executive Director of the School of Extended Learning (SXL) at Governors State University (GovState), has recently been invited to join the Illinois Workforce Innovation Board’s (IWIB) Apprenticeship Illinois Committee.

The committee is dedicated to expanding apprenticeship and work-based learning across the state.

Schmidt anticipates bringing his wealth of experience to the committee.

“I’m honored to join IWIB’s Apprenticeship Illinois Committee to help expand apprenticeships into new industries and grow statewide capacity to provide apprenticeship opportunities to job seekers and employers,'' said Schmidt.

Already, Schmidt has made strides to further this mission with the recently established apprenticeship programs at GovState. Officially announced at a signing ceremony during National Apprenticeship Week in November, the programs combine on-the-job training with classroom instruction in the following areas: Supply Chain Logistics Management, Industrial Production Management and Production, and Planning and Expediting Clerk.

These newly instated programs are only the beginning for what Schmidt hopes to accomplish at GovState and as a member of the IWIB apprenticeship committee.

“I anticipate supporting Registered Apprenticeships in non-traditional occupations starting with supply chain and hoping to implement more credit-based, degree-seeking apprenticeships working with the Colleges at GovState,” said Schmidt.

Registered Apprenticeships for the Supply Chain Industry are now offered at Governors State University (GovState), thanks to the efforts of the School of Extended Learning (SXL) and the Supply Chain Innovation Center and Business Incubator (SCICBI).

These apprenticeship programs combine on-the-job training with related classroom instruction. At the core of each program is hands-on learning in the workplace under the guidance of experienced mentors. This is complemented by classroom training that provides theoretical knowledge and helps apprentices understand the underlying concepts of their work, said Craig Schmidt, Executive Director, School of Extended Learning.

With the start of National Apprenticeship Week on Nov. 13, SXL and SCICBI are hosting a ceremony on Nov. 16 at 11 a.m. in the lobby outside the Center for Performing Arts to share how registered apprenticeships can bring value to hiring, upskilling, and retention challenges. Dr. Tricia Kerns will share her experience and insights in training, consulting, and collaborating with companies as they build supply chain resilience.

GovState is currently sponsoring three programs: Supply Chain Logistics Management, Industrial Production Management and Production, Planning and Expediting Clerk. Each program takes a year and a half to complete and upon completion, apprentices receive nationally recognized credentials that validate their skills and qualifications.

“The apprenticeship programs at GovState create a new opportunity for us to provide value to a growing number of manufacturing and logistics companies with whom we are working,” said Reggie Greenwood, Director of SCICBI.

Governors State offers STEAM Camp for fall/winter 2023-2024

Governors State University’s (GovState) annual STEAM Camp fall and winter sessions are underway for the third year in a row. Unlike the weeklong summer sessions, fall sessions are unique in that students can be signed up for one or more days with some sessions taking place on Saturdays. The winter session is three consecutive days in early January 2024.

Offered by GovState since 2014, the camp engages students ages 11 to 16 in experiments, field activities, project-based learning, field trips and more to encourage them to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics.

The upcoming sessions will cover topics like art exploration, biological sciences and film.

Camp dates are as follows:

FALL SESSION TWO: Saturday, October 21, 10 AM to 12 PM, Art Exploration

FALL SESSION THREE: Saturday, November 11, 10 AM to 12 PM, Biological Sciences

GSU's Veterans Resource Center to present at national conference

Governors State University (GSU) School of Extended Learning is excited to announce that Angelica Damiani (right), Coordinator of Military Programs, and Paige Fisher (left), Veteran Education Specialist, both from The Veterans Resource Center at GSU, will be participating in the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) Regional Conference - Region 5 on April 27 in Ontario, Canada.

The Veterans Resource Center at GSU has been ranked “Best of the Best” by U.S. Veterans Magazine as a Top Veteran-Friendly School for several years. Angelica and Paige, along with Rebecca Schreurs (GSU Academic Advisor) beat out nine other teams at the Illinois Academic Advising Association (ILACADA) Annual Conference, Bet on Success, which was held at GSU on September 30, 2022. Their winning presentation, Advising Veterans, secured them an invite to compete at the Regional Conference.

The NACADA promotes and supports quality academic advising in institutions of higher education to enhance the educational development of students.

Jaguar Jumps: Post High School Advancement for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities

On November 4, 2022, Faculty Emeritus Roberta O’Shea, Ph.D. and Michelle Sebasco, Director of Academic Partnerships and Continuing Education at Governors State University’s (GSU) School of Extended Learning (SXL), along with three current Jaguar Jumps (JJ) students, presented at the Illinois Transition Conference in Peoria, IL on the success of the JJ program.

Jaguar Jumps is offered at Governors State University for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities and serves students aged 17 and over at various stages in their lives who are seeking options and opportunities for continuing their education after high school and/or gaining employment and independent living. It is one of the few programs of its kind in the Southland region.

The good intentions of the Jaguar Jumps program translated into good works at GSU and grew from a community-based program that focused on health, movement, and social opportunities for these students into successful academic pathways to degree programs or workforce development opportunities.

Students Anthony Beese, who served as a volunteer for GSU’s Center for Performing Arts this past season, Ben Penachio and Mary Kate Del Canton shared their experiences as Jaguar Jumps students with conference attendees.

Success stories were also shared. Ben Penachio, who presented at the conference, has matriculated from Jaguar Jumps to the College of DuPage’s Criminal Justice Program with intentions of transferring to GSU to continue his Criminal Justice studies. O’Shea and Sebasco also shared Jaguar Jumps student Elijah Gomez’ story at the conference. Gomez successfully matriculated from SXL’s Jaguar Jumps program into GSU’s Bachelor of Communication program. He has completed an SXL Podcasting class and can be found at the university’s Basketball games as the very first roving reporter, interviewing spectators courtside. In addition to the success of Gomez and others, Daniel Pop is another JJ alum doing great things! Pop matriculated from the Jaguar Jumps program to Elmhurst College in the Fall of 2021. He also created a video about his experiences post high school.

SXL hosts Kinesio Taping Workshop

Governors State University’s School of Extended Learning (SXL) recently celebrated the launch of a new course that shows students the power of kinesio taping.

At SXL’s first two-day Kinesio Taping Foundation Workshop, Instructor Clem Carder taught occupational students and practitioners how to evaluate, assess and treat the needs of patients using the elastic tape designed to mimic the skin to alleviate pain. The workshop adds to SXL’s robust catalog of courses that offer students hands-on experiences.

“The wonderful thing about the class is, it’s not just lectures; the class is designed for you to leave and start working with patients right away,” said Carder, a certified Occupational Therapy Assistance, Licensed Massage Therapist, and a Kinesio Taping Instructor for over 15 years with extensive experience in pain management. “We tape each other, so people are always excited when we put it on their back and their back feels better or if they had a problem with a ligament injury, we tape their knee and it feels better.”

Though the workshop focused on teaching students how to use the tape for muscles, ligament injuries, swelling, and for scar remodeling, it can be used for nearly everything when you know how to use it, Carder said.

“In my opinion, everybody should know how to use the tape,” she said, noting it has many applications, including as a replacement for some pain medications. “There are some physicians that are using kinesio tape right after a surgery and they find that their patients have less pain, use less pain medications, they heal better, and it’s backed-up by research.”

For Masters of Occupational Therapy alum Dustin Hogan (22’), the workshop gave he and other students a tool to provide the best possible care for those they work with.

“The workshop is a commitment to professional growth and exploring opportunities that can help you develop as an aspiring professional,” he said. “It’s very practical and teaches you practical skills based on scientifically studied principles.”

Governor State University’s School of Extended Learning is hosting its annual virtual science, technology, art and mathematics (STEAM) camp for Winter 2022 beginning Dec. 27.

Since 2014, GSU’s STEAM camp has introduced campers ages 11 to 16 to current topics in science, technology, the arts, mathematics, and career development, taught by highly qualified faculty, business, and industry volunteers.

SXL Training Students for One of the Fastest Growing Healthcare Careers

Thanks to a state-funded program, Governors State University’s (GSU )School of Extended Learning (SXL) will help train underrepresented individuals in one of the fastest growing healthcare careers at no cost.

The virtual program, led by expert healthcare instructors, will feature training in clinical medical assisting or medical coding and billing. It’s geared toward the unemployed, individuals working part-time who are experiencing barriers to employment and those from areas disproportionately impacted by COVID-19.The program is also available to working Clinical Nursing Assistants who wish to upskill and shift into one of these in-demand roles.

The program, offered thanks to an Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity grant, prepares students to take the National Workforce Career Association Medical Billing and Coding Specialist Certification (MBCS), the National Healthcareer Association Certified Billing & Coding Specialist (CBCS) exam and the National Healthcareer Association Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) exam.

Students will be advised as to which certification is best for them based on knowledge and career goals. After obtaining the national certification credentials, students will have access to job placement assistance, giving them a chance to launch their new career in months. Certification exam vouchers are included.

Applicants must have a High School diploma or GED to sit for the certification exams. Basic computer skills and intermediate English language fluency are also required.

Johanna Hansen, a 37-year-old currently taking the Medical Billing and Coding course, said it allows her to not only pursue a career in the medical field but to maintain a balanced home and family life.

“When I was told that I could do it all from home, it was an added bonus,” said Hansen. “With a part-time job, kids, a wonderful fiance and a home full of animals, online courses are truly my only option and GSU made it extremely practical and convenient. I look forward to my new career and the possibilities it will allow for my family in the future.”

The program comes as the need for professionals who understand how to code healthcare services and procedures for third-party insurance reimbursement is growing substantially. These roles are excellent work-from-home opportunities for families juggling life demands.

Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 8% growth in Medical Coders and Billers (Medical Secretaries and Administrative Assts) by 2029. The average annual salary for the position is $37,350. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 5-7% growth in Clinical Medical Assistant by 2029.The average starting salary range for the role is $36,995-$50,580.

SXL Helps Professionals Start and Run Businesses

When Robert Bethke decided to start a freight brokerage firm with a friend, he turned to Governors State University’s (GSU) School of Extended Learning (SXL) Supply Chain Innovation Center and Business Incubator (SCICBI) for help.

Bethke knew he would gain certifications easily recognizable by logistics companies, shippers and freight companies all over the world and the knowledge needed to succeed in the industry.

Now, after completing the programs, he can run the business and make it profitable.

“This is a very unique industry and without this knowledge, I could never start day one on this business,” said Bethke. “Without the certification courses, I wouldn’t understand how the industry works.”

One of the certifications he received in July 2022 was GSU’s Association for Supply Chain Management (ASCM) certificate in Logistics, Transportation and Distribution (CLTD). CLTD is designed for logistics, transportation and distribution professionals across all industries, including, logistics managers/engineers, supply chain logistics managers, and traffic managers. The CLTD modules include content on logistics network design, sustainability and reverse logistics, capacity planning and demand management and other topics vital to executives, managers, engineers and team members alike.

He also got a certification in ASCM Certified Supply Chain Professional (CSCP). The CSCP content covers the following key topics:

What Bethke learned not only helped broaden his understanding of his role as a freight broker agent but the roles of other key players in the supply chain.

“Now I know when I speak to a shipper, I can understand their inventory issues, transportation issues, lack of transportation. And combining that with the freight broker agent course, I can also understand the viewpoint of the trucking companies, the truck drivers themselves, the issues they face dealing with shippers and vice versa,” he said.

He was also able to receive funding through the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) to help pay for his schooling. WIOA is a federally funded grant program to assist unemployed individuals in entering or returning to the workforce. Although GSU does not provide vouchers, we honor them for our approved programs.

GSU welcomes new executive director for SXL

Governors State University (GSU) welcomes Craig Schmidt as Executive Director of the School of Extended Learning.

As Executive Director, Schmidt, a GSU alumni and College of Business Hall of Achievement inductee (20’), will head the university’s hub for non-degree options geared toward working professionals. Schmidt will work with business leaders to identify training opportunities and collaborate with community organizations on grant funding. He will also partner with GSU’s colleges and faculty to deliver training that creates innovation and prepares individuals for jobs of the future.

Schmidt comes to GSU from the Calumet Area Industrial Commission, a non-profit organization specializing in economic and workforce development. There, he served as Vice President of Talent Development, leading workforce development efforts linking businesses to educational programs and resources.

With more than 20 years of experience in leadership positions in the public and private sectors, Schmidt has raised over $25 million for organizations he’s worked for. His expertise includes strategic planning and leadership, workforce development, education and training, grant writing, event planning, community engagement and curriculum development. Some of his various roles have included Consultant at CDS Workforce Solutions, Vice President of Community and Economic Development at Prairie State College and Director of Education and Administrative Services at Blue Cross Blue Shield Association.

“I'm excited to join GSU and contribute to their excellence in education and to add to its presence as a valuable partner and educator in the Chicago Southland region and beyond," Schmidt said.

GSU HR Director shares marketable skills with students

Sandra Marak is busy in her role as Director of Human Resources Services at Governors State University (GSU), but she dedicates some of personal time to teach adult students pursuing a PHR/SPHR Professional in Human Resources certification preparation course, through GSU’s School of Extended Learning (SXL).

Marak (’11), who is a student favorite, said she’s a proud product of GSU, receiving her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from GSU. She is now working towards her doctorate.

“It only seems natural that I would want to give back and make a difference in a student’s life,” she said, adding that now is the perfect time to advance in the human resources field. “All industries are looking for HR professionals to be strategic partners to help them meet their goals and fulfill their mission. I also think that career-pathing and succession-planning are on the forefront of everyone’s minds.”

SXL has received several compliments on Marak’s teaching style from students, including this Google review from a recent student, Justin Halm:

“I would highly recommend this course to anyone who is considering taking their SPHR Exam. Sandra was helpful with all the tips and tricks that she shares with her students. Also, she took the time to tailor the teaching style of the course to best fit my style of learning. Additionally, she helped me even after the class was over with any questions that I had. Marak said her role at GSU has taught her the importance of adjusting her approach to maximize student outcomes.

“I always try to meet students where they are and help them get to where they need to be in order to pass the test. I pay close attention to who they are, how they learn, and what they know, so I can adapt my teaching style to best help students reach their goals,” Marak said.

“Continuing Education keeps you up to date on the latest HR trends,” SXL Executive Director Amy Barsha added. “There has never been a more dynamic time to be in human resources. HR managers with current skills in the post-pandemic environment are well positioned to advance.”

The Forbes Human Resources Council notes in its article “Emerging HR Trends For 2022 and Beyond,” “almost 60% of HR leaders said building critical skills and competencies will be their top priority in 2022”, and that the top trends include hybrid work models, employee wellness, diversity, equity and inclusion, employee reskilling and upskilling, and data literacy.

Marak agrees.

“I think all HR departments across the nation are facing challenges of employee turnover and employee retention. The pandemic opened a new world of remote work and HR professionals are looking to prepare their leaders with the resources necessary to be successful at managing employees who are now working completely remote. HR’s need is to look at the entire employee lifecycle, engaging those employees who are in the physical office as well as those working remotely, while looking at ways to maintain a connection with both.”

When asked what motivates her to teach adult continuing education, Marak says it is her belief in being a part of something bigger than she is.

“GSU’s core values align with my own professional core values, so it is easy to want to be involved, and thankfully, we have an administration that supports my involvement with SXL.”

In fact, the GSU President Dr. Cheryl Green, not only supports staff and faculty involvement in teaching professional development, but also has made professional development for all employees a priority.

“Dr. Green’s vision gave us the roadmap to create a new employee professional development program called S.E.E.D.S., which stands for Securing Excellence through Employee Development and Support. With the encouragement of our new Associate Vice President of HR Joshua Allen and dedicated support by Associate Director Kristina Houston, GSU is rolling out the program to the campus community this spring,” Marak said.

It is no secret that people of color have been disproportionately impacted by the pandemic statewide. That’s why as a majority minority institution, and emerging Hispanic Serving Institution (eHSI), Governors State University (GSU) and its School of Extended Learning (SXL), work to educate, advocate for, and prepare the new majority workforce with today’s most sought-after career skills.

Amid disparities that highlight the challenges underrepresented communities face, programs like SXL are vital. In the first quarter of 2021, Black unemployment was reported at 13.3%, according to the Economic Policy Institute, versus white unemployment at 6.1%. Early in the pandemic the largest group to drop out of the workforce was working mothers at a rate almost double that of men (15.1%), according to The Illinois Policy Institute (IPI).

Illinois’ women, and especially minority women, are driving the state’s employment recovery at 96% and 75% respectively, IPI reported in late 2021. SXL is helping to re-train this talented workforce segment to help the region bounce back and fill in-demand positions across multiple industries, including healthcare, legal support professions, information technology, business, human resources, and more. SXL is an approved Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) program provider, so often-times adults who qualify re-train for free. Others utilize one of SXL’s other flexible payment options.

Ariel Harris-Blacher is one example, who is now employed at a law firm in Naperville, IL. She found SXL’s payment options and above-and-beyond customer service critical to her success. She attended GSU for the Paralegal certification program, where her teachers were understanding and always willing to work with their students.

“The work was challenging but taught me a lot and prepared me for my preferred profession,” she said. “I utilized the Sallie Mae loan to help me pay and complete the program. Throughout the process, many people helped me and guided me, and for that I am truly thankful.”

An overwhelming majority of people using SXL services are women, but GSU alumni Justin Smith is an example of why more men should be too.

He credits his renewed corporate interest to his recent Lean Six Sigma Green Belt program through SXL, noting it was “life altering.”

“It is a class that helped me look at my own life from the lens of a continuous improvement cycle, and it challenged less developed areas in my life and habits that needed to be eliminated,” Smith said. “The class ignited a new level of confidence in me, and now I am aggressively pursuing my future. I would strongly suggest that anyone interested in management take this class.”

In addition to those benefits, he said the class helps you dissect "your why"."

“In our ‘why’ is where the real conversations begin,” he said. "It is the purpose for our path and the ‘why’ is the path for our purpose. Since I have taken the course and made it known that I successfully completed the course, companies have been calling in excess!”

SXL’s Executive Director Amy Barsha said Ariel and Justin are two examples of why she finds her work rewarding.

“One of the bright sides of this very difficult time has been the increased recognition of the value of continuing education as a tool to improve economic outcomes and equity in the workforce," she said. "The job market is shifting so much, and so rapidly, it can be difficult to land a job if solely relying on a degree you earned a while ago, and even more difficult if you’ve been out of the workforce for a while. We see moms who’ve been managing a household as a valuable talent pool for companies or adult students right out of college as emerging leaders. With the right career training or certification, they could be your next Supervisor.”

SXL is also proud to work with GSU’s degree programs to augment the student experience with the latest credentials to maximize career readiness for people of color and all workers. Some of the trainings even count as credit towards a degree, like the CompTIA A+, Network + or Security + certifications, or Lean Six Sigma Green Belt.
