Known for blending hip-hop with African musical and visual influences, the group has built a legacy around consciousness, empowerment, self-reflection and community.

Their breakthrough album, “3 Years, 5 Months and 2 Days in the Life Of…,” earned Arrested Development two Grammy Awards, including Best New Artist and Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group for “Tennessee.” The group has also received MTV, Soul Train and NAACP Image Award recognition, and Rolling Stone named Arrested Development Band of the Year in 1992. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame later recognized “Tennessee” among the songs that helped shape rock and roll.

Songs including “Tennessee,” “People Everyday” and “Mr. Wendal” helped establish Arrested Development as one of the defining voices of socially conscious hip-hop. Throughout its career, the group has used music to engage with issues of identity, culture, homelessness, social justice and community empowerment, while supporting organizations and movements including the National Coalition for the Homeless and the African National Congress.

More than 30 years after their breakthrough, Arrested Development continues to create new music rooted in reflection, storytelling and social awareness. Their 2024 double album, Bullets in the Chamber, featured collaborations with artists including Chuck D, Canibus, Diana King, Ras Kass, Grandmaster Caz, Sol Messiah and Sa-Roc.

The group’s newest project, Adult Contemporary Hip-Hop, continues that forward momentum. Executive produced by Speech for Vagabond Productions and Configa for Configaration Records, the project includes the singles “All I See Is Melanin” and “Pack It Out,” blending lyrical storytelling, soul and socially conscious perspective.

Beyond the Concert: Lyric-Writing Workshop with Speech Thomas
Arrested Development’s visit to Governors State University will extend beyond the stage with a lyric-writing workshop led by founding member Speech Thomas.

The workshop will invite participants to explore the power of words, storytelling and creative expression through hip-hop while learning directly from an artist whose career has demonstrated how songwriting can connect personal experience with larger conversations about identity, culture, community and social change.

The workshop is part of The Center’s broader effort to create meaningful connections between visiting artists, students and the community through educational and engagement opportunities that complement live performance through their SPARK Series.

In advance of the performance, Governors State University faculty, staff and students are also being invited to participate in a campus fan interview campaign exploring Arrested Development’s impact on music, culture and social consciousness. Members of the GovState community can share when they first discovered the group, what its music has meant to them and how particular songs have connected with their lives and experiences.

The November engagement offers both longtime fans and a new generation of listeners the chance to experience a group that continues to demonstrate hip-hop’s power as music, storytelling and cultural expression.

Ticket Information

Arrested Development
Saturday, November 7, 2026 at 7:30 p.m.
The Center for Performing Arts at Governors State University
1 University Parkway
University Park, IL 60484

Tickets are available at https://www.govst.edu/arresteddevelopment or by calling the Box Office at 708-235-2222.

Governors State University faculty and staff receive 15% off tickets, and GovState students may purchase up to four tickets for $20 each.

Free parking is available on campus.

About The Center for Performing Arts at Governors State University

The Center for Performing Arts at Governors State University brings high-quality music, theatre, dance, family programming and cultural experiences to Chicago’s Southland. The program, established through the generosity of Dr. Carl Greer, Ph.D., Psy.D. and his late wife, Dr. Patricia Greer, M.A., Ph.D., provides financial assistance, academic support, professional development opportunities, mentorship, and a peer network designed to help students succeed in college and persist in STEM fields. Dr. Carl Greer, a retired clinical psychologist and Jungian analyst, a businessman, shamanic practitioner, author, and a philanthropist.

Funding over 60 charities and more than 2,000 past and current Greer Scholars, the mission of the Greer Foundation is to support programs that address the root causes of violence, poverty and social injustice, protect the ecology of the earth, promote effective healthcare including psychological health and alternative medicine, and preserve indigenous spiritual and healing practices.

The expansion of Greer Scholars Program, administered through the university’s Latinx Resource Center (LRC), builds upon the proven success of the original STEM-focused initiative. The new healthcare pipeline is launched in partnership with the College of Health and Human Services to ease financial barriers and provide comprehensive academic mentorship for future nursing professionals. Eligible incoming full-time freshmen will receive renewable scholarships of up to $5,000 per year for up to four years based on financial need, alongside tailored professional development, peer networks, and structured academic support.

"In just two years, the Greer Scholars Program has shown the impact that targeted scholarships and student success programming can have on student confidence and achievement," said Emmanuel Lopez, director of the Latinx Resource Center. "We are grateful to the Greer Foundation for their continued partnership and excited to see that impact expand with the launch of a new Greer Scholars Program for nursing students in Fall 2026."

The expansion stems from strong student outcomes since the program's initial launch in fall 2024. Among current scholars, 39% have achieved a GPA above 3.5, and 100% of surveyed participants report increased confidence in their academic majors.

Led by College of Health and Human Services Dean Catherine Balthazar, the new nursing initiative will mirror the holistic support model used by the existing STEM cohorts, which includes periodic success planning, career readiness workshops, and intensive advising.

“What makes the Greer Scholars Program special is that students don't have to do it alone,” said Karina Hernandez Cazarez, Assistant Director of the LRC. “STEM can be challenging, but having the financial support of the scholarship and a community that's invested in their success helps students stay focused on their goals and build confidence.”

Current scholars emphasize that the program’s value extends far beyond financial assistance.

"The scholarship has impacted me in more ways than one. Because of it, I am able to worry less about my financial needs for me to go to college," said Nayeli Urquizo, a Communication Disorders major. "I am also grateful for my mentors who are constantly reassuring the members of this scholarship that they care about our successes and failures throughout our college experience and are more than happy to help us along the way."

Halie Jernigan, a Community Health major, credited the LRC staff with keeping her "ahead of the game" regarding her future career endeavors. "They are extremely supportive of what I want to do and also give great advice and ideas as to how I can continue to succeed," Jernigan said.

Applications are currently open for both the incoming STEM and new nursing cohorts for the fall 2026 academic term. Meanwhile, the University reported a 61 percent retention rate among freshmen entering sophomore year, serving as a strong indicator for future enrollment projections.

Despite a slight dip in overall student enrollment – 4,399 to 4,349 – University leaders are celebrating the gains in an environment that has been difficult as institutions of higher education have seen dwindling funding and enrollment.

President Joyce C. Ester has been in office since July and is excited about the trend in retention and growth of the freshman class.

“For more than five decades, Governors State University has been a pillar of the Southland- empowering students to shape tomorrow’s world. Green, who passed on April 23, a month after retiring.

Well-versed in the world of higher education, Dr. Ester brings more than 30 years of experience in various roles throughout academia that addressed academic and student affairs, faculty and staff governance, and financial management.

An accomplished leader in higher education, Dr. Ester currently serves as President of Normandale Community College (Normandale) in Bloomington, Minnesota, a position she has held since 2014. Normandale is the largest college and third largest institution in the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system, serving more than 14,000 credit student annually.

Under Ester’s leadership, Normandale saw an 18 percent enrollment increase among students of color between 2015-2020 and has continued to be one of the top transfer institutions in the state.

Additionally, Dr. Ester recently secured a $2 million lead gift to support the development of a new Interdisciplinary Professional Education (IPE) program and facilities for Health Care.

Before joining Normandale, Dr. Ester served two years as President of Kennedy King College, one of seven schools that comprise City Colleges of Chicago. She has also served as Associate Vice President for Student Services for Bakersfield College, Assistant Vice President for Judicial Affairs and Division Planning at California State University Fresno, and Assistant Dean of Students/Judicial Affairs at University of California, Santa Barbara.

Her extensive experience in higher education extends beyond her leadership at Normandale. Dr. Ester is also the Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees for the Higher Learning Commission, and a Gallaudet University Board of Trustees member.

With the selection of Dr. Ester, Governors State University concludes a national search that yielded 62 applicants. Our concern for these individuals returning home is the direct link to public health in our community. That means your community, too,’’ said Coffey, Associate Professor in the Department of Social Work at the College of Health and Human Services at GovState.

Dr. Coffey served as primary study investigator on Barriers and Facilitators to Quality Healthcare for African Americans with Incarceration Histories which was recently published in the “Journal of General Internal Medicine.”

According to national statistics, there are more than 1.9 million incarcerated individuals in the U.S., and African Americans are 5.9 times more likely to be incarcerated. Dr. Coffey and Diane Morse, MD, senior author on the study and internal medicine physician at the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC), examine the impact of the lack of quality health care among individuals during and after incarceration and the need to address barriers to access.

Incarcerated African Americans are disproportionately impacted by health conditions such as chronic diseases, mental illnesses, and substance use disorders, as well as reproductive health challenges. Preventive measures, such as cancer screenings, are often overlooked among these populations, increasing potential long-term risk. To address these inequities, investigators conducted four focus groups of African American men and women aged 40 and older released from Illinois State Prisons or Cook County Jail during or after 2015.

Themes of barriers to care included a lack of trustworthiness of health care systems, gaps in overall understanding and knowledge of health conditions and preventive measures, hesitation to get help because of the negative attitudes and actions of correctional staff and/or health care providers, and excessive and punitive co-pays during incarceration. In a recent report from 2015, at least 35 states charged incarcerated persons medical fees in state and county jails for both nurse and provider visits.

“When I share these study findings with colleagues, many are surprised by the number of incarcerated individuals who have to co-pay for medical care, despite earning pennies per hour if they work in prisons,” said Morse, also an associate professor in the Department of Public Health Sciences and associate director of the Office of Health Equity Research at URMC’s Center for Community Health & Prevention.

"The key to successful reintegration into society is gainful employment and earning a living wage serves as a critical means for individuals to turn away from crime and to positively contribute to society. If an individual is too sick to work, the costly weight of their care and well-being shifts to vulnerable families and under-resourced communities that are ill-equipped to address their medical and social survival needs,” said Coffey.

“Addressing barriers and facilitators to quality health care for African Americans with incarceration histories can positively contribute to decreasing inequities in the health and well-being of all communities across the nation.”

Click here to read the full article, which requires a subscription.

Zion Banks

Director of Communications

Governors State University

zbanks@govst.edu

630-842-6427

press releases
