It’s time to kick off the 2026 school year at Governors State University (GovState)! Join fellow Jaguars in welcoming the Class of 2030 and returning students at Convocation 2026 on Thursday, September 10.

The annual event is a GovState tradition that marks the beginning of a new academic year and offers an opportunity for students, faculty, staff, alumni, and university leadership to come together to celebrate.

Before the ceremony, everyone can gather in the Hall of Governors from 12 – 12:45 p.m. for fun and games.

The Convocation ceremony runs from 1 – 2 p.m. in the Center for Performing Arts where everyone in attendance can hear from President Joyce C. Ester, student leaders, the alumni keynote speaker, and University leadership as they welcome new and returning Jaguars.

Following the ceremony, from 2 - 3 p.m. on the Hall of Governors Patio, there will be an Ice Cream Social where everyone can get a cool treat while mingling with others.

As fall classes start again at Governors State University (GovState), Jaguars can look forward to a first week back with Welcome Week events that offer opportunities to get to know the campus and fellow students from club activities to the Women's Volleyball match against Judson.

Welcome Week is GovState's annual beginning of the semester tradition for new and returning students, which begins with the first day of classes on Monday, August 31. Jaguars can look forward to a week of events to connect with campus life and fellow students:

• A Welcome Week classic, Speed Friending kicks off the week on Monday, August 31 at noon in the Hall of Governors. This is a chance to meet new people and make connections through fast-paced conversations with bonding cards to break the ice.
• On Tuesday, September 1 at noon on the Hall of Governors Patio, students can meet members of Coalition of Occupational Therapy Advocates for Diversity (COTAD) and get to know the occupational therapy profession. Treats and networking in one!
• Drop in at room D1496 between 12 - 2 p.m. on Wednesday, September 2 for Pizza & Pages, a casual meet-and-greet event for book lovers! Learn more about the Reading Jaguars book club, what they do, and how to get involved while enjoying free pizza, playing fun games, and meeting other readers.
• Get ready for the Welcome Week Block Party and Resource Fair on Thursday, September 3! Starting at 1 p.m. outside the D Building Main Entrance, Jaguars can meet student leaders, explore campus resources, enjoy live music, and a complimentary lunch while exploring how to get involved on campus.
• Wrap up the week at the Blend Into Success: Fuel Your Future at the Food Pantry event on Friday, September 4 at noon in room B1242. Learn about available food resources, services, and hours. There will also be complimentary smoothie samples, recipe cards and snack bags, and a drawing for a portable blender cup while supplies last!

It is my pleasure to welcome you to Governors State University and the start of the 2026–27 academic year. Whether you are returning to campus or joining the GovState community for the first time, I am so glad you chose GovState.

I hope you’ll join us for Welcome Week activities during the first week of classes, which start Monday, August 31. Welcome Week is a great opportunity to explore clubs and organizations, learn more about Greek Life, Jaguar Connection (the club and organization student portal), meet members of the Student Senate and become familiar with campus resources, including the GovState Food Pantry.

Throughout the school year, I also encourage you to discover the many ways to get involved at GovState. A passionate advocate for inclusive educational environments, Emmanuel Lopez, Director of the Latinx Resource Center (LRC) at Governors State University (GovState), recently received the Inclusion, Access, and Success Award from the Illinois Association for College Admission Counseling (IACAC).

The award, established in 2015, honors individuals who have been instrumental in making postsecondary educational opportunities accessible to historically underrepresented students. For Lopez, this recognition highlights his leadership in supporting undocumented students and expanding college access initiatives, in addition to fostering inclusive educational environments throughout Illinois.

Lopez received the award during the 12th Annual IACAC Sharing the Dream Conference, which GovState hosted for the first time in the institution's history, bringing together more than 300 registered participants from across Illinois to advance educational access and success for undocumented students and students from mixed-status families.

“As co-chair of this year's planning committee, it has been an honor to help bring the Sharing the Dream Conference to Governors State University,” Lopez said. “For many undocumented student liaisons, hosting this conference on their campus is a career milestone.”

The conference featured various workshops that covered topics related to admissions, financial aid, student support services, advocacy, and best practices for serving undocumented students and their families. Amongst those in attendance were representatives from 23 universities, 12 community colleges, 10 high schools, and eight non-profits.

One teenager in a Governors State University-based restorative justice program read a book that mirrored his own life — and it transformed him.

The novel, “Long Way Down” by Jason Reynolds, follows a teenage boy wrestling with revenge after his older brother’s murder. For the 15-year-old young man in Governors State’s (GovState) Beyond the Margins program, finishing the book was a milestone.

“He said it was the first time he’d ever read a book cover to cover,” said Camille O’Quin, assistant professor of Communication Disorders and founder of Beyond the Margins at GovState.  “I think he saw himself in the story and could relate to the content. Plus, he was in a supportive environment and allowed to express himself.”

The student is now an artist. He was one of 10 participants in the program ages 15 to 18 years old - all young men involved in the juvenile justice system. Instead of incarceration, Cook County Circuit Court Judge Darron Bowden recommended they participate in Redeploy Illinois, a state-funded initiative that supports justice-involved youth in south suburban schools. The program’s mission is to divert youth from incarceration while reducing recidivism.

Redeploy, in turn, partners with Beyond the Margins, an innovative initiative blending literacy, restorative justice, creativity and mentorship.

The collaboration is part academic, part creativity and part hope, said O’Quin, adding, “This is a life raft.”

Beyond the Margins began taking shape in early 2025 during conversations between O’Quin and Redeploy Illinois Director Mark Werner, a 1996 GovState alumnus and adjunct professor.

For O’Quin, literacy quickly emerged as the foundation of the program.

She points to sobering statistics from the National Literacy Institute: 60 percent of individuals in U.S. jails are unable to read, while 85 percent of youth in juvenile justice settings are considered functionally illiterate.

“It’s part of the school-to-prison pipeline,” O’Quin said, “and I knew the right books could help disrupt that.”

The group began in fall 2025 with two books that centered on the experiences of young Black men. “Long Way Down” kicked off the session in the fall followed by “Punching the Air” by Ibi Zoboi and Dr. Yusef Salaam, in spring 2026.

Participants met weekly at GovState during a 12-week session where they read novels aloud, engaged in guided discussions and completed a creative project inspired by the books. The sessions also include peace circles designed to foster trust, reflection and community.

The young man who read “Long Way Down” painted a scene inspired by the book.

The program also became an interdisciplinary learning experience for GovState graduate students. Eleven interns from Communication Disorders, Social Work and Special Education helped facilitate discussions and mentor participants throughout the semester.

Over time, the young men began taking ownership of the space.

“By the end of the fall session, the boys were leading the peace circles and the discussions,” O’Quin said. “It was great to see that transition.”

Another defining moment came during a campus tour through GovState’s Digital Learning and Media Design Department (DLMD). One participant watched students producing podcasts and became inspired to create his own audio project for the end-of-year showcase.

In December, the 17-year-old thanked professors and students for never treating him differently or making him feel bad about his past.  “Ya'll don't have to work with us kids, but you do. Thank you.”

Werner said the transformation among the young men was inspiring.

“At its core, the program strengthens literacy by weaving together learning, restorative justice and authentic youth voice, while building confidence and community,” Werner said. “Regardless of their literacy level, each youth was engaged and, by the end, they were more confident and had enjoyed the learning process.”

Now, O’Quin is preparing to expand Beyond the Margins. She is developing a website with toolkits that educators can use to replicate restorative literacy practices in other classrooms and programs. She also hopes to launch a podcast exploring restorative literacy and sharing participants’ stories.

“This work is about creating spaces where young people feel seen, supported and empowered through literacy,” O’Quin said.

Beyond the Margins was made possible by faculty and staff who were dedicated to training and supervising the graduate students involved in Beyond the Margins.

Excitement, celebration, academic regalia, caps adorned with decorations, silk cords and sashes were certainly the vibe at Governors State University’s (GovState) Commencement 2026.

Over 1,100 graduates crossed the stage at the Tinley Park Convention Center on Saturday, May 16, 2026, to receive their degrees, celebrate their achievement, shed a tear or two, and dance with joy. The venue was full of energy and the number of people watching via livestream was record-breaking.

“My mantra has been ‘Work hard in silence and let success be your noise.’”

Journey Mae Manual, Morning Ceremony Student Speaker

Journey Mae Manual, who earned a Bachelor of Science in Health Informatics, was the student speaker for the morning ceremony and her energy was contagious. “This moment is not just a celebration of academic achievement but a celebration of resilience, faith and the power of perseverance. Resilience is about moving forward, growing stronger, and finding purpose in the struggle,” she said. “My mantra has been ‘Work hard in silence and let success be your noise.’”

She ended her speech amid cheers and applause with this reminder, “Remember that setbacks do not signal failure, but opportunities to learn, adapt and rise stronger. Congratulations to the Class of 2026! And to God be the glory!”

“So, Jaguars, take the opportunity, take the seat at the table, take the risk, be bold enough to rise and courageous enough to lift someone with you.”

Victoria Gómez, Afternoon Ceremony Student Speaker

Victoria Gómez, who earned a Bachelor of Arts in English, was the student speaker for the afternoon ceremony. She spoke passionately about belonging and overcoming self-doubt.  

“Doubt has been a quiet companion for many of us, including myself,” Victoria admitted.

Growing up, she was the shy girl in the back of the classroom and the only Spanish speaker. She was told so many times that her options in life would be limited until she began to doubt her abilities also.

“GovState didn’t erase those doubts,” Victoria said. “It taught us that remaining rooted in who we are means going forward while honoring where we come from, our accents, our histories, our setbacks, and our responsibilities are not barriers. They are foundations.”

She has taken on the charge to hold the door open and make sure that others won’t have to doubt if they belong. “Every time I’ve found the courage to take up space is because someone first made space for me,” said Victoria.

“So, Jaguars, take the opportunity, take the seat at the table, take the risk, be bold enough to rise and courageous enough to lift someone with you,” she said. “Congratulations, Class of 2026! Our opportunities are endless!”

Joyce C. Ester, Ph.D., the seventh president of Governors State University, said to the Class of 2026, “Today, we celebrate you. Today, we join together to recognize and applaud your accomplishments, your hard work, and your perseverance. Graduates, I am proud that you invested in yourself and your future by pursuing your degree.”

At this, President Ester’s first commencement ceremony at GovState, she thanked the GovState faculty and staff for pouring into the graduates, and the family and friends of the graduates for supporting them. Then she began a roll call of sorts, and the venue went up in cheers. Ester called upon graduates to stand if they fell under the following categories: active-duty members of the armed forces or a veteran; graduates who worked full time or worked multiple jobs while pursuing their degree; first generation students; and single parents. She then called upon graduates to stand and applaud themselves for getting here.

To those who have considered returning to school to get their degree, she said, “Look at the examples before you of individuals who made it happen in spite of, and in some cases, because of the obstacles, both real and perceived, we welcome you to become a part of the Governors State community, too,” said Dr. Ester.

“Graduates of the Class of 2026, you have a responsibility to demonstrate what it means to be a critical thinker, to embrace civil and honest discord, to model what it means to have an educated mind, and to be an example of how to understand and use information wisely,” President Ester said.

“Take this moment to appreciate the journey and applaud yourself. You are here because you earned it, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise,” said President Ester. “Congratulations, Class of 2026!”

With cheers from loved ones and celebratory gestures by members of historical Black organizations, Governors State University’s (GovState) 2026 Doctoral Hooding Ceremony welcomed 58 doctoral candidates from the College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) and the College of Health and Human Services (CHHS).

President Joyce C. Ester commemorated her first GovState hooding ceremony by sharing an analogy she once heard. In it, the path of a doctoral student was compared to the seven dwarfs, reminding the candidates to “always remember the journey.”

“At first, you're a little dopey and bashful because you weren't quite sure what you signed up for,” said President Ester. “In the middle, you may have experienced times of illness—sneezy, exhaustion—sleepy, irritability—grumpy. However, as you sit here today, you're happy because soon, we'll call you Doc. On behalf of the Governors State University community, congratulations.”

President Ester was joined by Provost Beverly Schneller, members of Cabinet, faculty, staff, and members of the Board of Trustees (BOT). 

On the opposite side of the stage sat the candidates from Counseling and Supervision, Interdisciplinary Leadership, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, and Physical Therapy, all smiling with pride, anticipating their doctoral hoods.

Dating to medieval times, the hooding tradition celebrates academic achievement. Each degree is signified by a special color lining an elegant velvet scarf, which once held a function — to keep warm the shaven heads of monks.

Wearing a light blue lined hood, Mike Davis, a veteran U.S. Navy hospital corpsman (combat medic), came to GovState for the Interdisciplinary Leadership (INLD) program after hearing positive things about the faculty, staff, and curriculum from a friend in the military. He felt that the program aligned with his career goals and upon enrolling, he found people who pushed him to be his best. 

“The professors held me at a higher standard, they didn’t let me stay at an average standing,” said Mike. “Dr. (Erica) Ceka believed in me enough to be the first person to ever use the HistoryMakers archive and create a space where my work would be used as a template for others.” 

A member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Mike wore gold boots in honor of his organization’s colors: purple and gold.

Also dressed in a light blue lined hood, Tiffany Weathers-Fincher pursued her Ed.D. in INLD with a concentration in Higher Education, which gave her the opportunity to follow her dream to one day teach first-year college students.

“Many students enter college feeling unprepared, unsure, and even afraid of what lies ahead,” said Tiffany. “I know this because I was once that student. Because of that experience, I am committed to helping students navigate their college journey with a sense of purpose and belonging.”

Decked out in a slate blue lined hood, Jillian Rancatore returned to GovState for her Doctorate in Occupational Therapy knowing that the University had a team of faculty and staff dedicated to academic growth and development who would help strengthen her skills as a practitioner.

She looks to return the favor to students who come after her in her adjunct teaching role at GovState.

“I hope to continue my teaching role at Governors State University as I have enjoyed working directly with our faculty and students as we collaboratively work towards promoting best practices, providing a multitude of learning opportunities, and preparing students to be competent, confident, and empathetic occupational therapists.”

Donning a teal lined hood, Daniel Pena reflected on why he came to GovState for his Doctor of Physical Therapy, which involved new experiences in more ways than one as a first-generation student starting graduate school across the country.

“I was looking for a place that valued not only personalized education but also community engagement and collaboration,” said Daniel. “The smaller cohort size and the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with both professors and my peers made it feel like the perfect environment for education and growth."

Marking the end of the ceremony, Provost Schneller recognized two distinguished members of CEHD who are retiring, Dean Shannon Dermer and Dr. Quincy Martin III. “Throughout their time at Governors State University, they have demonstrated unwavering dedication to their students, colleagues, and the institution.”

Candidates processed out of the auditorium, encouraged by the words spoken earlier by alumna and Trustee Judith L. Mitchell.

“This isn't just an ending—it's the beginning,” said Trustee Mitchell. “We are proud to have you represent Governors State University and look forward to the positive change you'll bring to our communities.”

Speaking to the 2026 Dual Degree Program (DDP) graduates, the largest class of the program’s history, Governors State University’s (GovState) Provost Beverly Schneller reminded the students that they have the ability to drive change.

“All it takes is one hook and you can build a better future because you’re building the blocks of community and belonging and relationships, which you then turn into shared values, sustainability, and the change that will continue to transform our world,” said Provost Schneller, who noted the graduates' unique skills and knowledge as a result of choosing DDP.

The DDP program is a partnership between GovState and 17 Chicagoland community colleges that provides transfer students with a seamless pathway to earn their associate and bachelor’s degrees.

Having welcomed over 1,460 students to the program since its first cohort in 2012, this year’s class has 102 DDP graduates; 46 of them attended the graduate celebration leading up to Commencement. 

At the event, DDP graduates gathered among family, friends, GovState leadership, including President Joyce C. Ester, and representatives from DDP’s partner colleges to receive the second of their dual cords. These braided cords feature black and white to represent the original colors of GovState woven with an additional color to represent the graduate’s community college.

Together, the colors signify the graduates’ academic journeys which began at a local community college to earn their associate degree and continued at GovState for their bachelor’s degree.

Director of DDP, Jessica Specht, commended the class on their accomplishments.

“There’s no doubt that you have made an impact here at Governors State,” said Specht. “You participated in the Honors Colleges, athletics, served in leadership roles and student organizations on top of being amazing students in your classes.”

She also noted that within the 2026 graduating class, there are 10 University Honors graduates, 26 DDP scholarship recipients, a Commencement speaker, a Student Senate President, and student organization presidents.

As a sendoff to the DDP Class of 2026, President Ester shared that it is not so much the time it took to get their degree that matters, but the actual degree, and she emphasized the power the graduates have to make a difference.

“You all in the DDP program represent exactly what higher education can be and is for this country and for our society,” said President Ester. “We know that you are going to change lives in whatever you do after you leave here, so congratulations and I’ll see you on Saturday.”

Dear Beloved Class of 2026,

We found each other in moments that didn’t always feel like beginnings. Some of us arrived with a full schedule and a full heart. Some of us arrived through a screen first, learning how to belong before we ever set foot on campus. Some of us weren’t sure if we were meant to stay. And yet, we did.  We stayed through the long commutes, through the “just one more assignment,” through the moments where leaving felt easier than continuing. We stayed, and we built something memorable.  

We found our way into classrooms that slowly started to feel like ours. In events where music carried across campus, and for a moment, everything felt better. Special shoutout to Culture Fest, Welcome Back Block Party, Homecoming Week, Alumni Dinner, Spring Fest, and Grad Week. In spaces where culture wasn’t just acknowledged, but shared, celebrated, and lived. We learned how to say yes before we felt ready. Yes to leadership. Yes to research. Yes to opportunities that didn’t come with a guide, only the belief that we could figure it out.

Some of us created spaces where there weren’t any: the library, the cafe, our offices, the dorms, and the gym, places for conversation, for creativity, for people to gather and stay a little longer. Some of us found our voice by helping tell the stories of others, capturing what this campus looks like, feels like, and stands for. 

We learned that the community we made built itself. In studying moments. In late conversations. In showing up again and again for those we care about, including ourselves. Somewhere along the way, what once felt unfamiliar started to feel like something we belonged to. What once felt temporary became something lasting. We built a lasting legacy that will inspire future Jaguars.

We Are GovState.

Not because we all had the same path, but because we made something meaningful out of the paths we were given. Because we showed up. Because we stayed in the unknown. And now, here we are. Not the same people who started this journey, but people who grew through it. People who are ready for what comes next, even if we’re still figuring it out.

So wherever you go next, take this with you: the ability to build community, the strength to keep going, and the reminder that you’ve already done something worth being proud of. Because you did that here. And no matter where we go, GovState will always be a part of us.

2026 Student Commencement Speakers

College of Arts and Sciences

Returning to school nearly two decades after leaving her corporate career to be a stay-at-home mom, Claudia Parker is looking forward to starting a new career in digital storytelling.

Having nothing but positive experiences while attending Governors State University’s (GovState) alumni banquets played a part in Claudia Parker’s decision to attend the University in pursuit of her master’s degree in Independent Film and Digital Imaging. With that choice, she found a place that encouraged her passion and pushed her forward.

With a full-time job, Natasha Thomas found Governors State University (GovState) to be the perfect fit for her educational goals, providing hybrid schedules and supportive professors that worked with her schedule.

Earning her Master of Public Administration, Natasha dreams of becoming a park district superintendent to serve her community. For now, she’s looking forward to celebrating her graduation with her loved ones who supported her throughout her educational journey.

A second-generation immigrant, Alexa Fortu has received consistent support from her parents to follow her passions, leading her to discover her love of Biology, her chosen field of study at Governors State University (GovState).

Transferring to GovState as part of the Dual Degree Program, Alexa found a space that encouraged her curiosity, joining the Honors College and Chemistry Club, a subject she chose to minor in. She was also an active member of Biology Club, serving as an officer and Social Media Manager. She enjoyed her time at GovState so much that she’ll be returning this fall to pursue her master’s degree in biology.

An Army and Marine Corps veteran and the 2025 Lincoln Laureate, Jonathan Cooper returned to school after a 12-year break with the intention to make an impact. Pursuing a double major of Political Science and History at Governors State University (GovState), Jonathan found a community where he could lead, serve, and grow.

He became a part of student leadership, joining multiple campus organizations including Alpha Phi Omega, Student Veterans Association, and SALUTE Veterans National Honor Society (he currently serves as president of all three organizations). Jonathan also joined the Student Senate as the Student Veterans Representative, so he could advocate for fellow veterans, ensuring their voices are heard on campus.

Biology major Rachael Muenchow found Governors State University’s (GovState) rural campus to be a perfect fit for her choice of study. Following her passion, Rachael engaged in many activities on campus to learn all she could about nature, including Monarch Butterfly Tagging and Bird Banding, where she joined other students in collecting data to research and track the butterflies and birds home to GovState. 

Rachael was an active member of the Biology Club, serving as Secretary then Treasurer, in which she managed club finances, presented an annual budget, and helped facilitate club communications.

For Jaylon Garner, his interest in Accounting began in elementary school when he learned about the field seeing a friend’s parent working as an accountant. He transferred to Governors State University (GovState) as part of the Dual Degree Program (DDP) and since then, he’s gotten involved in Tau Sigma, the national honors society of transfer students, and the Accounting, Finance and Economics Club.

With Commencement coming up, Jaylon is excited to get his bachelor’s degree so he can pursue his master’s degree and take his certified public accountant exams.

With a passion to help build connections between schools and their communities to support student success, Tiffany Weathers-Fincher knew Governors State University (GovState) was the campus to go to for her doctoral degree. Pursuing her Doctor of Education in Interdisciplinary Leadership proved a challenging yet rewarding experience, preparing her with the skills to follow one of her dreams to help future educators.

As a first-generation and nontraditional college student, Rebecca “Becca” Fassbender found that getting involved and asking questions were key to her success at Governors State University (GovState). Joining the Dual Degree Program was only the start of her involvement at GovState, where she chose to pursue a degree in Psychology more than a decade after a high school class that sparked her interest in the subject.

Part of the Honors College and Psi Chi Honor Society, Becca is graduating with summa cum laude honors and plans to get her Doctor of Psychology degree from Roosevelt University in pursuit of her dream to become a licensed clinical psychologist.

Thinking back to her first day on campus, Paige Oliver remembers that Governors State University (GovState) felt inviting and lived up to the positive reputation she heard about from alumni. Throughout her journey in the Master of Occupational Therapy (MOT) program, Paige connected with other students and faculty who shared her passion to help others and now she can’t wait to bring her skills to the field.

Now that she's passed her board exam and become officially licensed, Paige is excited to begin her career in occupational therapy, a long-awaited goal after years of school.

With dreams to help others regain mobility to live their fullest lives, Logan Krska decided to pursue his Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) at Governors State University (GovState) after a positive experience earning his bachelor’s degree on campus.

Throughout his GovState journey, Logan got involved in any way he could, joining the University’s Physical Therapy Student Association and eventually becoming its President, and working in the Provost’s Office as a Graduate Assistant. He also volunteered and served as Race Director at the 2025 Physical Therapy Student Association (PTSA) Stroke Awareness 5K, a student led event that raises money for the GovState Stroke Support group.

When Jillian Rancatore decided to pursue her Doctor of Occupational Therapy, she knew Governors State University (GovState) was the university to go to after earning both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from GovState. As a wife and working mother of a four-year-old son, Jillian found that GovState offered the balance she was looking for when adding academics back into her life.

With support from her family and doctoral colleagues, Jillian found that while her experience had its challenges, it was overall rewarding. Her program inspired reflection on her current practices and strengthened her passion to help others, something she’s excited to continue with her doctorate in hand.

For first-generation student Karen Muhammad, pursuing her Master of Social Work (MSW) at Governors State University (GovState) aligned with her innate desire to help others. Active in her own community, volunteering at various events that focus on social justice and community engagement, Karen brought that same energy to GovState.

She joined the National Association of Social Workers (NASW), the National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS), and the Phi Alpha Honor Society for Social Work, each recognizing her dedication and service in social work, leadership, and academics. Karen is also a member of Tri Alpha, a First Generation Student Honors Society, and was most recently recognized as the Outstanding MSW Student for the social work program.

Across Governors State University (GovState), student workers play an essential role in supporting daily operations, strengthening campus services, and contributing to the university’s mission. GovState serves as a bridge between academic learning and career development, allowing students to build practical skills, gain mentorship, and make meaningful contributions to their departments and the local community. 

For GovState senior Sandra Lopez, being a student worker means showing up with both skill and heart. As a member of Phi Alpha National Honor Society, social work major and intern in the legal clinic, she supports attorneys by organizing client intake materials, managing appointments, and researching vital community resources. More importantly, she leads with empathy, ensuring every individual feels heard during difficult moments. “This experience has taught me how to advocate, not just for myself, but for my clients,” Sandra shares. Dr. Phyllis West is Director of Social Justice Initiative which runs the legal clinic. West notes Sandra's  “compassion and dedication,” highlighting her growth in crisis management and her commitment to serving others with care and purpose. For Sandra, this role has turned classroom knowledge into a meaningful, real-world impact, one she plans to carry into her future career. 

Like Sandra, Roman Ghimire’s journey at GovState shows how student work can shape a future. MFA student in Independent Film and Digital Imaging, Roman serves as a graduate assistant in the College of Education and Human Development, where he uses photography, videography, and digital storytelling to highlight faculty and student experiences. His work behind the camera has strengthened his communication, professionalism, and time management skills essential to his goal of becoming a filmmaker. “This experience has given me hands-on learning that aligns with my career,” he shares. Colleague, Penny Perdue praises his creativity and dedication to his work. For Roman, GovState became a home where his vision is sharpened, his voice is developed, and his future begins to take frame. 

Beyond storytelling and media, student work at GovState also creates space for care, connection, and leadership. As the lead of Community Counseling Services, Jenna Kane (MA in Counseling) oversees daily operations, supports fellow graduate assistants, and helps connect clients with critical mental health resources. Through this role, GovState has strengthened her confidence as a leader while deepening her ability to communicate with clients in thoughtful, professional ways. “This program has really shaped me to be on the right track,” she shares. Supervisor, Dr. Ileana Ungureanu, notes Jenna “leads with professionalism, accountability, and empathy,” consistently fostering a supportive environment. For Jenna, this experience has turned compassion into practice, preparing her to make a meaningful impact beyond campus.

As some student workers take a front-of-the-house approach, others work behind the scenes, just as essential. Computer science undergraduate student and technical assistant, Jaylen Neely brings a problem-solver’s mindset to the GovState legal clinic. From troubleshooting printers to updating webpages and analyzing data, his work keeps systems running smoothly for both staff and community members. Along the way, he’s learned to work efficiently and adapt under pressure. Supervisor Dr. West highlights his “enthusiasm for problem-solving” and strong research mindset. For Jaylen, this position has allowed him to see how his skills can support others, turning everyday tasks into something that makes a difference in the local community. 

While some roles keep systems running behind the scenes, others shape the very platforms students and faculty rely on every day. Behind every webpage, update, and polished detail is work that often goes unseen, but never unnoticed. Md Imtiaz Hasnine plays a key role in building the College of Business’s digital presence as a graduate assistant in the Management, Marketing, and Entrepreneurship division. From supporting the university’s website migration to assisting faculty with research and content development, his work requires adaptability and constant learning. Dr. Stephen Wagner highlights Imtiaz’s “reliability, curiosity, and strong willingness to learn.” For Imtiaz, this role has been about learning as he goes and growing into skills he once thought were out of reach. 

Together, these student workers reflect the range of opportunities available at GovState and the impact of hands-on experience in shaping future careers. Whether working directly with community members, supporting faculty, or maintaining the systems that keep the university running, each student has developed skills that extend beyond the classroom.

In celebration of student excellence in the classroom and in the military, Governors State University (GovState) students were recently honored at a Veterans Graduation Celebration, where students picked up their cords and stoles.

The intimiate gathering brought together graduating veterans, military-connected students, and staff from the Veterans Resource Center to recognize a unique transition from military service to higher education.

“Congratulations to everyone. This is a milestone,” said Jonathan Cooper, Army and Marine Corps veteran, president of the Student Veterans Association, 2025 Lincoln Laureate, and the campus SALUTE chapter. “You’re coming from the battlefield to the classroom. Sometimes it feels like you’re stepping on landmines. But the thing is, we all made it.”

SALUTE (service, academics, leadership, unity, tribute, and excellence) is the first national honors society that recognizes student veterans and active military in two-year and four-year higher education institutions.

During the event, graduates from multiple academic programs and military branches, including the Army, Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps, were acknowledged for completing their degrees while balancing the challenges of military life and the transition to college. 

Staff from the Veterans Resource Center also encouraged graduates to remain involved with the campus veteran community as alumni, highlighting opportunities to continue participating in student veteran activities and mentorship.

The ceremony concluded with the swearing-in of new members of the SALUTE honor society, recognizing student veterans who have demonstrated strong academic achievement and leadership during their time at Governors State.

Just beginning her journey at Governors State University (GovState), freshman Sophia Flowers is breaking records in her collegiate track season.

Recently, Sophia competed in her first outdoor 10K race, finishing with a time of 36:19 and breaking the previous school record. This achievement is meaningful to Sophia, who sees it as a mark of her growth.

“It reflects the hard work that I have put into each practice, so it was really satisfying to see that dedication pay off!” said Sophia. “I never thought that I would ever achieve such a thing and so quickly too, so it was a very special moment for me.”

Her record-breaking race qualified her for National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Nationals with her set to compete in the 10K at Asheville, North Carolina on May 21. Thinking back on her race, Sophia is thankful for her teammates and coaches.

“Just seeing how much I have improved with both my mental toughness and fitness level at GovState is truly incredible to me! I could never have done it without the support of my coaches and teammates,” said Sophia, who noted that her high school cross country coach was there to celebrate with her, too.

GovState Head Men's and Women's Track Coach John Niendorf said the Jaguars coaching staff are proud of Sophia.

“The 10K is one of the most mentally taxing races a competitor can do on the track, and she remained poised throughout the event, despite being a freshman who had never competed in this race before,” said Coach Niendorf. “Hitting a National mark on your first outdoor race is incredible and she made the entire team, coaching staff, and school proud today.”

Sophia added that GovState has helped her grow as an athlete and student.

“Being part of a developing program with supportive coaches and teammates has been incredibly rewarding, while also building discipline and resilience in and out of the classroom.”

She's also enjoying being a part of a team. “It has been especially exciting to see my teammates and I improve each day! Watching everyone on my team motivate one another is definitely a huge factor that contributed to my positive experience and overall success,” said Sophia.

In addition to her record-breaking race, Sophia's accolades include being named Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Track Athlete of the Week twice this spring. As her running career at GovState is just beginning, Sophia is looking forward to what's next.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the success of the school, and I cannot wait to see what the future brings!” said Sophia.

Two graduating seniors will be speaking at Governors State University's (GovState) 2026 Commencement Ceremonies to be held at Tinley Park Convention Center on Saturday, May 16.

Journey Manuel is a first-generation student proudly graduating from Governors State University with a Bachelor of Science in Health Informatics. She's a passionate student leader, serving as a peer mentor and secretary of the Student Senate. Journey has balanced her academic life as a student who switched majors late in the game, and as a person living with two autoimmune diseases.

As the 2026 student commencement speaker, Journey plans to share her story of cultivating resilience not in solitude but through connections with others. 

Journey will speak at the 10 a.m. ceremony for the College of Education and Human Development and the College of Health and Human Services.

Victoria Gómez is a dedicated and creative student, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in English from Governors State University. With her commencement, Victoria will become the third GovState grad in her family. As a determined leader involved with on-campus organizations such as Reading Jaguars and Tau Sigma, Victoria brings love and color to her life as a proud Latina woman.

As the 2026 afternoon student Commencement speaker, Victoria is set to inspire the Class of 2026 and share her story of overcoming, taking up space where there isn’t any, and thriving in a family that supports continuing education. 

Victoria will speak at the 4 p.m. ceremony for the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Business.

Just weeks before the ribbon cutting at a new soccer complex at Governors State University (GovState), the Athletics Department welcomes Jose “Tony” Gonzalez as the new Head Men's Soccer Coach.

Before coming to GovState, Gonzalez (pictured in the center) was the head soccer coach for the men's and women's teams at South Suburban College (SSC) in South Holland, Illinois. There, he worked with the men's team for 25 seasons and the women's team for nine years.

During his time at SSC, the women's team played in five consecutive National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region IV finals, from 2021 to 2026, as well competed in NJCAA championships. To learn more about Gonzalez, click here to read the full announcement from GovState Athletics.

On Friday, April 24, Gonzalez will join University officials to cut the ribbon at the new GovState soccer complex, near the Prairie Place student residence. The event will be held from 1 - 3 p.m. to showcase the new field and to honor the University's championship men's soccer team with a special ring ceremony. In addition to the ring ceremony, there will be a presentation of varsity jackets to the soccer team and soccer skills contests for all ages.

Connecting with nature and celebrating Earth this April, Governors State University (GovState) combines conservation, sustainability, and education with a week full of events in honor of Earth Day.

Here are five campus activities to honor Earth from Monday, April 20 to Friday, April 24.

1. Meditate with a tree: At any point during the week, pick a tree on campus and take a moment to appreciate the surrounding nature. Observe the sights and sounds around the tree from the leaves swaying in the breeze to the birds chirping in branches. 

2. Dralle Road Clean Up: Students can join in on the annual tradition to clean up Dralle Road near campus, which leads to the biology field station, a vital hub for research and coursework. From 1 - 4 p.m. on Monday, April 20, students can come together to maintain this specialized area, cleaning and preserving the site in respect for the academic and natural environment.

3. Learn about bird migration and reducing building strikes: In the D-Building Atrium from 1 – 4 pm on Wednesday, April 22, Biology student Rachael Muenchow will have a table set-up to highlight some of her research on birds, including how to reduce the abundance of bird strikes against building windows. There will be a monitor displaying live imagery of bird migration, window decals to lessen window strikes, and additional written materials about why birds collide with buildings.

4. Clean up a garden for spring planting: The garden alcove outside the F-Building is being converted into a native pollinator garden to attract diverse animals, including birds, bees, and butterflies. From noon to 2 pm on Friday, April 24 near room F1300, people can help clean the garden by clearing out invasive species and preparing the space for planting native plants.

5. Take a stroll through theNate sculptures: Celebrate the outdoors and the larger-than-life sculptures at the Nathan Manilow Sculpture Park (theNate) on GovState’s campus with a self-guided tour using the free Otocast app. Set for International Sculpture Day on Saturday, April 25 from 9 a.m. – 6 p.m., guests are invited to walk through the collection ranging from “Working on the Failed Utopia” by Christine Tarkowski to “Field Rotation” by Mary Miss and “Avian Station” by Bernard Williams. These sculptures and more are related to environmental issues and the land.

From humanities to industry, three Governors State University (GovState) faculty members share how the topics they've explored in their research reflect innovation in women's roles. From portrayals of women in the media to women fruit pickers, and business leaders, faculty share their expertise on the evolution of social expectations.

The avenging-woman in popular television and film

By examining popular culture and media for representations of gender and sexuality, Lara Stache, Professor of Communication Studies, has found that media can tell the story of society at the time of its production.

“At first glance, a television series, film, song, meme, or book that has become popular may not seem like a social or political artifact, but when we delve deeper and peel back the layers of construction, messaging, and power in these products that drive significant revenue and receive millions of eyes on them, we find out a lot about how our society works,” said Stache.

In her research, Stache looks specifically at the avenging-woman in popular television and film. She’s noticed that in every revenge narrative featuring a female lead, the role only exists if the justice system has failed to protect her or those she loves.

“We can look at avenging-woman narratives in television, film, music, and books to tell us how our society is making sense of female empowerment, sexual assault, and gendered violence,” shared Stache. “Media is both a mirror that reflects our world, and a creator that produces stories.” 

She adds that current events also impact the media created. She cited the recent scandal involving billionaires and those in power taking advantage of young women.

“In a time where we are confronting the release of the [Jeffrey] Epstein files and dealing with significant political and social revelations about imbalances of power at the intersection of money, celebrity, and politics, media narratives reveal underlying tensions and help us make sense of the aftermath.”

The mythical fingers of women in fruit

Jelena Radovich-Fanta, is a Professor of Anthropology at GovState, and researches exploring the exportation of grapes from Chile, and the women behind the work.

Chile is one of the world’s top exporters of grapes, and the field workers who pick them for export to countries like America are primarily women. 

“It’s mostly women who work three months out of the year, very intensive, long workout hours, processing the grapes that go for export.”

What started as a summer job for women ended up becoming a main source of income for households. 

With newfound financial freedom, women have been able to take a stronger role both in married households and as single mothers. But that still begs the question: Why Women? She points to a common narrative.

“Whether you're looking at the fruit industry or the garment industry, there's the feminization of labor. There's a narrative that women have more delicate fingers, and they could take care of the grape. The grape is very delicate, so if you crush it, you can't export it. But really, that’s a way to justify a low-paying and hazardous job.”

Despite the tough nature of the job, the women in Chile have found personal empowerment through the opportunities they didn’t have before. “Women have told me that with their first salary, they bought a microwave and a washing machine.” 

Having personal income allowed women to make household purchases, support their children, and participate in social activities outside the home, going out, purchasing makeup and jewelry from companies like Avon, and exploring their identity outside of a wife or daughter.

The working woman and her family

Having lived the past 20 years in the United States, and abroad for years before that, Ujvala Rajadhyaksha, Associate Dean in the College of Business, has lived experience with how juggling family and work can differ across cultures, yet a common thread is the expectations that often fall on women.

Her research reveals how family responsibilities tend to interfere more with work duties in family-oriented cultures.

“Work is the big monster that tends to interfere with family life for both men and women, but certainly so for women in certain contexts,” said Rajadhyaksha. “Certain occupations have an innate flexibility built into them in terms of the place of work, hours of work and things like that.”

Another factor that could upset the balance is caregiving, both for younger children and older adults.

“Caregiving is a responsibility that the evidence seems to suggest still tends to fall very heavily on women compared to men across cultures, across the globe, and even across income levels,” said Rajadhyaksha.

“It would also seem that higher income people are perhaps in a better position to afford caregiving help, but the gendering of caregiving doesn't go away because the person you hire invariably is more likely to be a woman than a man.”

While there are many organizational and HR policies across companies intended to increase work flexibility, there is still a gender bias. 

“To me that is a problem that really needs to be solved because that's the key to trying to build a semblance of equity in people's work lives.”

Celebrate movement, rhythm, and artistry this March at Governors State University (GovState) as dance takes center stage at the Center for Performing Arts (the Center). 

With “All That Jazz” by Theatre and Performance Studies and the GovState Dance Company and a performance of “Unleash the Beats” by Chicago Tap Theatre, the month highlights the Center’s role as a creative home for students, alumni, professional artists, and young audiences—and as a premier venue for dance in the region.

Showcasing the talent and creative energy of GovState students, alumni and faculty, “All That Jazz” will be presented in two formats that reflect the Center’s commitment to artistic excellence, education, and access.

A shortened, school-day version will be performed on Thursday, March 5 at 10 a.m. for hundreds of elementary through high school students, offering young audiences the opportunity to experience live dance in a professional theatre setting. These student matinees connect classroom learning with the performing arts and help introduce students to dance as a creative outlet and a potential career path.

Two full-length performances will be presented on Saturday, March 7 at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., inviting the broader community to experience the complete production. Together, these performances demonstrate how the Center supports both emerging artists and audience development through thoughtfully layered programming.

With “Unleash the Beats,” Chicago Tap Theatre will bring the electrifying art of tap dance to the Center on Saturday, March 28 at 7:30 p.m. Known for blending percussive movement, musicality, and contemporary storytelling, the company pushes the boundaries of tap as a rhythmic and theatrical form. Their performance underscores dance as a living, evolving art rooted in tradition while actively engaging with modern themes and audiences.

As March celebrates movement on stage, it also reflects the Center’s broader mission: to educate, inspire, and connect communities through the power of the performing arts. Looking ahead, the Center’s investment in dance continues into the next season, with plans that include world-class artists and future collaboration.

With three weeks remaining in the regular season, Governors State University’s (GovState) Men’s Basketball team is in first place in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) standings.

Jaguars Head Men’s Basketball Coach/Athletic Director Tony Bates said the latest standings put the 2025-26 Jaguars in prime first place position to earn GovState’s first CCAC Conference men’s title since the 2017-18 championship season.

GovState is 11-3 in CCAC games entering the February 4 home game against Indiana University Northwest. The game starts at 7:30 p.m. in the ARC.

The Jaguars have six regular season games remaining before the CCAC post-season tournament begins with a home playoff game for GovState on February 25 in the ARC. Time and opponent to be announced.

An abundance of information creates a scarcity of attention, warned Dr. Uday Shinde, a Governors State University (GovState) professor, in his keynote address at the University's annual MLK Breakfast, a gathering of administrators, students, and community leaders dedicated to honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This year's event centered on a timely theme: “Honoring Our History - Fighting for Our Future.”

“If I don’t have the attention to give you, how can I possibly listen? If I can’t listen, how can I understand? And if I can’t understand, how can I possibly connect?” said Dr. Shinde, who studies how spirituality and mindfulness impacts the workplace.

The morning began with a breakfast reception followed by a powerful dramatic performance titled “We Were Just Children.” Co-written for the stage by Lauren Wells-Mann, GovState’s Director of Arts in Education and Community Engagement, the play was brought to life by local junior high and high school students.

The performance told the harrowing story of the four young girls killed September 15, 1963 in Birmingham's 16th Street Baptist Church bombing. The actors skillfully balanced the joyful innocence of youth—playing traditional circle games like “Little Sally Walker” and “Miss Mary Mack”—with a haunting portrayal of the explosion that ended their lives, leaving the audience in somber reflection.

Adding to the emotional depth of the morning, GovState’s Trans4mation Gospel Choir delivered a stirring performance. Their voices reverberated through the venue, leaving a lasting impression on the hearts and minds of everyone in attendance.

The event’s keynote address, “Honoring Our History – Fighting for Our Future,” was delivered by Dr. Shinde, a Professor of Management and Entrepreneurship at GovState. Dr. Shinde took the stage visibly moved by the morning’s performances.

Admitting he was "at a loss for words" after such soul-stirring art, Dr. Shinde pivoted to speak directly from the heart.

“I read the news this morning and thought, 'The world has gone mad,'” Dr. Shinde remarked. “There is so much polarization—division between genders, generations, and ideologies. The gap is everywhere we look.”

Dr. Shinde drew a sharp line between the nonviolent resistance of Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. King and the "insidious threat" of the modern age: the loss of human connection through technology. He cited research showing that human attention spans have plummeted to roughly eight seconds—less than that of a goldfish.

He argued that King and Gandhi were not merely political tacticians, but "spiritual giants" who used prayer and contemplation to fuel their movements. 

Closing with a nod to Michael Jackson’s “Man in the Mirror,” Dr. Shinde challenged the audience to look inward before attempting to change the world.

The event concluded with a practical call to action: attendees were encouraged to dedicate 15 to 30 minutes each day to silence and contemplation. The "fight for the future," begins with the quiet discipline of the mind.

The breakfast also highlighted student winners of the MLK Writing Contest, who were asked to reflect on the theme, "Honoring the Legacy and Thinking of Our Future."

Experience the gallery through the eyes of the artists. Governors State University's (GovState) upcoming art walk invites the public to explore new exhibits alongside the visionary minds who created them.

“It is important for our students to meet and experience professional artists who are producing excellent artwork and have a depth of knowledge about the field,” said Jeff Stevenson, Director and Curator of the Nathan Manilow Sculpture Park (theNate) and Visual Arts Gallery at GovState.

Though, he adds that the art walk is open to all, not just students.

“The art walk is a very casual and visitor friendly way to see the art, meet the artists, and enjoy conversations about all sorts of things,” said Stevenson about the upcoming event. 

The Campus Art Walk with Artists’ Talk runs from 3 – 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 4. Beginning in the Visual Arts Gallery, the walk stops at three different exhibits followed by a reception from 5 – 7:30 p.m. 

Poetry and memory inspire Gwen Yen Chiu

Expanding on her sculpture, “The Moon, My Shadow, and I,” that can be found beyond the lake in theNate sculpture park, Gwen Yen Chiu brings her exhibit “Northerly Winds,” which will be on display March 2 – April 3, 2026, in the Visual Arts Gallery.

With poetry and memory as inspiration, Yen Chiu’s work transforms line into form where past and present come together through layers of nostalgia, solitude, and historical reflection.

A Chicago-based Taiwanese American artist, Yen Chiu explores ideas of home, belonging, and identity within the Asian diaspora throughout her work. Drawing upon her early training in Chinese calligraphy and painting, she brings gestural line, rhythm, and movement into metal sculpture, connecting cultural tradition with contemporary expression.

Seeing vs feeling in paintings by Vesna Jovanovic

Playing with opposing ideas, Vesna Jovanovic’s exhibit “Bawdy” explores the tension between seeing and feeling, between the body as a subject and as an experience. This exhibit can be seen in the Big Walls Gallery (E/F Building Corridor) now through April 30, 2026.

Jovanovic is driven by one central question when creating: How do I depict a lived body instead of an observed one? Beginning her process with spontaneous ink pours that evolves into deliberate mark-making, her art blurs the line between control and surrender, comedy and vulnerability, reminding people that embodiment is never still but always shifting between the observed and the lived.

Bridging art and nature with Nikki Renee Anderson

Combining art with the natural world, Nikki Renee Anderson’s exhibit “Blossoms Becoming” transforms the garden into an intimate scene where the cycles of life unfold in vivid, visceral form. Her art is on display in the Skylight Gallery located in the GovState Library now through April 30, 2026.

Inspired by childhood mornings spent alone among plants, Anderson embraces the garden as a space of renewal, growth, and transformation. Her floral and organic sculptures stand as small monuments celebrating beauty, sensuality, and strength.

Warm up with some hot chocolate or catch the Governors State University (GovState) basketball doubleheader during the first week of classes as the University celebrates Jaguars’ return with Spring 2026 Welcome Week events.

Make the first day of classes one to remember with Open Mic Night on Tuesday, January 20. At 6 p.m. in Engbretson Hall, Jaguars can get together to share their voices in poems, songs, and stories at this Student Success Initiative (SSI) event. Court will soon be in session! Student Activities Council (SAC) will host a live debate on Wednesday, January 21 at 3 p.m. in the Hall of Honors where popular media will be put on trial in a mock courtroom hearing. Students can serve as attorneys, witnesses, judges, and jury members as they consider the influence of movies, music, social platforms, and celebrity culture on society. Questions? In the week leading up to Dr. Martin Luther King Day celebrations, Governors State University (GovState) President Joyce Ester quoted the iconic leader as she accepted the Community Champion Award from the South Suburban College (SSC) Foundation.

“Dr. King said the goal of education is intelligence plus character. That’s the role we play in higher education -- to make sure that students coming out of our institutions not only have a great education but also have the moral fiber to do the work they need to do.”

Ester joined four other awardees who were honored for excellence in service during the 2026 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Business Brunch at South Suburban Community College. Themes of compassion, leadership and integrity resonated with about 60 guests, including elected officials, educators, and business owners.

SSC President Lynette D. Stokes (shown second from left, front) said those honored, including Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, have used their platforms in public service, industry, and education to uplift others and strengthen the community.

“At South Suburban College, we believe education, leadership and community partnerships are powerful tools to advance equity and opportunities,’’ Stokes said.

 Ester, a native of Phoenix, Illinois, was  a natural choice for the Community Champion Award, Stokes said.

“Dr. Ester is new to Governors State but she’s not new to the community. She’s always been a champion in higher education, advocating for students. She embodies everything about a Community Champion.”

After graduating from Thornridge High School, Ester attended Northern Illinois University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in Sociology. She then earned a master’s degree and doctorate in Education from the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Ester returned to Illinois in 2011 to serve as President of Kennedy King College, one of seven schools that comprise City Colleges of Chicago. Before joining Governors State, Ester was president of Normandale Community College for 11 years, leading the largest college in the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system with more than 14,000 students. 

In July, Ester moved back to the Southland to begin her GovState presidential tenure.

Phoenix Mayor Terry Wells (pictured far left) nominated Ester for the SSC Foundation’s Community Champion Award to recognize her commitment to the area and the way she inspires youth.

“Wherever she goes, she tells people where she’s from,’’ said Wells, also Chairman of the South Suburban College Board of Trustees. “She talks about the pride she has in the small town that helped nurture her and shape her into the person she is today.”

After the MLK brunch, Wells shared the story of a  little girl who found out Ester she was African American. The girl told Wells that she had aspired to be a school teacher when she grew up, but after hearing about Ester wants to be a college president.

Beaming with pride for Ester's accomplishments, Wells said,  “Now that's  powerful .. And that’s the profound impact Dr. Ester has on our youth. As Mayor of the Village of 
Phoenix, I can tell you that this community cannot be prouder of Dr. Ester,'' Wells said.

• A generous scoop of Groovin’ at GovState summer concerts
• A bold splash of HEED Award pride
• 2-3 sparks of drone piloting excitement
• A sprinkle of new Jaguars receiving scholarships
• Optional: sunshine, music, and a few spontaneous photo ops 

Instructions 

Step 1: Warm the Community 

Preheat the campus with early-fall energy. 
Let the hallways fill with syllabi, iced lattes, and “Hey, I haven’t seen you since May!” 
Fold in Back-to-School Block Party vibes until the patio feels golden and alive. 
Set aside to rise, students will return bigger, louder, and hungrier (for snacks, knowledge, or both). 

Step 2: Add A Big Celebration 

Gently stir in two tablespoons of Homecoming JaguarMania, keeping the beat steady. 
You’ll know it’s mixed well once the air tastes like popcorn, pep rallies, and GovState orange. 
Allow memories to cling to the sides of the bowl: tug-a-way, singing, and a campus suddenly louder than a stadium. 

Step 3: Pour in Leadership & Legacy 

Slowly fold in the Investiture of President Joyce Ester, Ph.D.  
Mix until her story blends perfectly:  
- reading to future mini Jaguars,  
- meeting students and poets,  
- speaking her hope into the mic as if stirring new ambition into the pot.  
Simmer until unity thickens. 

Step 4: Sweeten with Sound 

Add Groovin’ at GovState, one concert at a time. 
Let the music dissolve stress, melt deadlines, and coat the community in summer warmth. 
Tip: the key to flavor is letting people dance like no one’s watching- even though everyone definitely is. 

Step 5: Whisk in Recognition 

Gradually shake in the Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award. 
Stir with pride until the mixture glows. 
Taste test: if you feel seen, represented, or celebrated, you’ve added enough. 

Step 6: Toss in a Dash of Takeoff 

Add a bold splash of excitement from the ever-growing drone piloting program-  
a reminder that GovState is always rewriting the horizon,
empowering technology, and taking flight!

Step 7: Fold in New Beginnings 

Stir gently as new Jaguars receive scholarships. 
Let hope rise like dough; let possibility smell like fresh paper and future classrooms. 
This is the softest part of the recipe- handle with care and a few tissues. 

Step 8: Finish with the Grand Flourish 

Right before serving, top with the biggest joy: 
Graduation for the Class of 2025. 
Fold in caps soaring through the sky, heartbeats under gowns, 
and families cheering like they’ve never cheered before. 
Serve warm. This is the taste of becoming.

As winter weather sets in, ensuring the safety and well-being of the Governors State University (GovState) community becomes a top priority. Here are some key tips and reminders to help GovState students, faculty, and staff stay safe this winter season:

Campus Safety

Stay in the Know:

• Winter Weather Advisory: A Winter Weather Advisory is issued when winter weather is expected, but not severe enough to meet warning criteria. Conditions such as light snow, freezing drizzle, or minor icing may still cause travel difficulties.

• Winter Weather Warning: A Winter Weather Warning is issued when significant or hazardous weather, such as heavy snow, major ice accumulation, or blizzard conditions are expected or already occurring. During a Winter Weather Warning, travel is strongly discouraged, dangerous conditions are expected, roads will have reduced visibility and there may be possible road closures.

The Department of Public Safety and Facilities Development and Management:

Facilities Development and Management works diligently to clear snow and ice from campus grounds. If you notice unsafe conditions, report them promptly.

The Department of Public Safety (DPS) is available 24/7 to assist with emergencies. Contact them at (708) 534-4900 or dial 911 in urgent situations.

Emergency Communication: 

In the event of an emergency GovState will send you an email, or text message. Dress Warmly:

To protect yourself during sub-zero temperatures, wearing more than one layer of clothing is essential for safety. Follow these layering steps:

• Base Layers: Wear t-shirts, leggings, or pajama pants under your clothes. 

• Extremities: Use two pairs of socks, boots, and insulated gloves or mittens.
• Head: Always wear a warm hat to retain body heat.
• Body: Bundle up with a warm coat to block out the chilly wind.
• Warning: Limit outdoor exposure; frostbite and hypothermia can begin in less than 5 minutes.

Navigating Outdoors:

• Stick to designated paths that are cleared and treated for ice.

• Report hazardous conditions, such as icy stairs or sidewalks, to DPS or Facilities. 

• Be cautious when walking through parking areas, as black ice can be hard to spot. Avoid rushing and take small, deliberate steps to maintain balance. When in doubt, walk like a penguin.

Plan Your Commute

When Driving:

• Check the wintry road conditions wintry road conditions (Courtesy of our friends at IDOT).

• Check your route(s) before you leave and plan a few alternate routes to your destination.

• Ensure your vehicle is winter-ready with properly inflated tires, a full gas tank, and an emergency kit (including blankets, a flashlight, and snacks).

• Drive cautiously, maintaining a safe distance from other vehicles and avoiding sudden braking.

• Take your time, limit distracted driving, slow down and expect delays due to icy roads and road closures. 

When Using Public Transportation:

• Be aware of delays or schedule changes due to inclement weather.

• Dress warmly and be prepared for wait times outdoors.

• Charge your cell phone.

Joined by hundreds of state and local leaders, higher education partners, alumni, faculty, staff, and family, Joyce C. Ester, Ph.D. was sworn in as the seventh President of Governors State University (GovState).  

This historic investiture ceremony was marked by warm reflections and inspiring stories of President Ester, her passion for higher education, and unending compassion for students. The Center for Performing Arts (The Center) where the event was held, was aglow with vibrantly colored academic regalia, warm smiles, greetings, and the expectancy that a newly sworn in president brings.  

The theme of ‘returning home’ was celebrated throughout a ceremony that was also marked by references to the Southland, where President Ester spent her formative years. A native of Phoenix, Illinois, Ester said the area’s spirit remains strong. Punctuating the ceremonial adorning of the Governors State University medallion upon Ester’s shoulders, was a beautiful rendition of the song, ‘Home’ from The Wiz, sung by GovState Alumnae Amber Whitted that invoked a spirit of home and brought some to tears.   

“The words and sentiment of that song,” President Ester said, “are fitting for my journey back to the Southland.”  

After graduating from Thornridge High School, Ester attended Northern Illinois University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in Sociology, then moved to California. She earned a master’s degree and doctorate in Education from the University of California, Santa Barbara. It was 16 years before she would return to Illinois where she served as President at Kennedy King College, one of seven schools that comprise City Colleges of Chicago. In Minnesota’s Normandale Community College, Ester served as President for 11 years, leading the largest college in the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system with more than 14,000 students. 

President Ester began her tenure with Governors State University on July 1, 2025 

Among those delivering remarks at the investiture were Dr. Barbara Gellman-Danley, President of the Higher Learning Commission; Sean O’Brien, President of GovState Student Senate; Dr Roberta Cordano, President of Gallaudet University, an institution that serves deaf and hard of hearing students, where President Ester serves as a trustee.  

All speakers noted President Ester’s integrity, leadership, and power to inspire. 

Speaking through an interpreter as she signed in American Sign Language (ASL) Dr. Cordano noted she is often the “the only one of my kind in the room.”  

Meeting President Ester, who is fluent in ASL, was a delight, she said.  

 “One day, as I sat alone, a woman sat beside me and began communicating with me in American Sign Language. I was stunned. From that moment forward, I saw her leadership, her commitment to students, and her ability to lead in higher education spheres. She connects authentically with people, she inspires transformation, and all of that begins with a deep commitment that radiates out from her… How fitting that the theme for today’s installation is coming home because Dr. Ester exemplifies that spirit -- the one of creating belonging, warmth, and a shared purpose. She also brings a sense of love -- a love for this state and this community she calls home.” 

Serving as emcee of the investiture, Dr. David Conrad noted that the word investiture is taken from the Latin root investire, and is a time-honored tradition that marks the formal installation of a new university president. 

“This centuries-old custom represents a major step in the life of an institution. It is an opportunity to honor our new president and reflect on our mission and values, and to envision our future together,” said Conrad, Associate Professor in the College of Education and Human Development,  

Noting the season, he said an autumn investiture historically aligns with the fall harvest, symbolic of new beginnings. In centuries past, the academic year began after the harvest in accordance with the medieval calendar. 

Before delivering her remarks, President Ester ceremoniously called the names of individuals who guided and shaped her for the journey that would lead to Governors State. “Home is a grounding, a place that needs no name, but your spirit knows you are there.” 

The names spoken included family members, mentors, and historic figures—including Dr. Martin Henry Freeman, the first Black president of an American college, and Willa Player, the first Black woman to lead a fully accredited four-year liberal arts institution. President Ester honored Rev. J.C. Smith who pastored her childhood church where she still worships. Smith’s son, Rev. Jeffery Smith, later delivered the invocation in a lunch that followed the investiture.  

Finally, President Ester called the name of her late mother, Linda Ester, whom she described as “my mom, my friend, my example. Ase,” she said, using the Yoruba and Swahili word for living energy as a word of affirmation, similar to ‘Amen,’ meaning ‘So be it.’  

In another significant moment, President Ester shared how her understanding of home deepened during her recent visit to Ghana, where she was installed as a Queen Mother in the Fra-Fra community outside Accra.  

“There,” she said, “I learned the Fra-Fra word for home: yeri.”  

She used YERI as an acronym outlining her vision as GovState’s seventh president.  

“Y — I see You. E - Economic vitality. R – Reputation. I – Innovation. My goal as president will be to operate in a manner that enhances the well-being of students, employees, and communities. Authentic relationships help us achieve our goals.” 

Ester closed with a heart-felt sentiment.

“While this day is said to be about me, it is really about all of us. I look to you to work with me—and more importantly, to work with one another. Together, we will build a shared future. Together, we will make this place a true home.”

Inala Bruce-Rose, a Communication Disorders major, is looking forward to building a dependable community as a member of Alpha Phi Omega, Governors State University’s (GovState) latest addition to Greek life on campus.

“The moment I was asked if I wanted to join, I immediately committed and asked for all the details,” said Inala. “Service is a place in my mind that grounds me and makes me feel whole, so how could I ever pass up an opportunity to do it for life?”

Another member, Jonathan Cooper, was drawn to the organization for its mission to develop leadership, promote friendship, and provide service to humanity, values that he lives by. As President of Alpha Phi Omega’s petitioning class, he hopes to build a legacy that lasts after he graduates.

“I want to create opportunities for students to connect, grow, and give back to the community around us,” said Jonathan, a Political Science and History double major. “I’m looking forward to watching others discover the same sense of purpose and belonging that inspired me to lead and serve."

Blaise Lukasiewicz, Documentation and Training Specialist at GovState, felt the same calling to support others as they grow as individuals and leaders, which motivated him to become an advisor for Alpha Phi Omega.

“I want to make a meaningful impact while growing as a leader alongside people who inspire me to do better,” said Lukasiewicz. “I look forward to sharing my experiences, helping guide their ideas into action, and watching them gain confidence as they serve others.”

As the third Greek-lettered organization on campus, Alpha Phi Omega marks a significant milestone for GovState, one that expands and strengthens the Fraternity and Sorority Life on campus, which is a point of pride for Montgomery Profitt, Greek Life Administrator.

“Having three Greek-lettered organizations on campus represents growth, diversity, and opportunity for our students to engage in leadership, service, and brotherhood or sisterhood,” said Proffit. “We’re truly excited to welcome Alpha Phi Omega and look forward to the positive impact they and the organizations still to come will have on our campus culture and student experience.”

The stage and lobby of the Center for Performing Arts (the Center) at Governors State University (GovState) was alive with energy, laughter, and joy as the university celebrated its Fifth Annual Distinguished Alumni Reception, honoring excellence, leadership, and the power of community. 

The event, hosted by Kimberly Gonzalez, Associate Director of Alumni Relations, and Scott Sowinski, Executive Director of the Center, started the evening with a comedic skit, bringing the audience together with laughs and cheers before recognizing the best of the GovState Alumni Community.  

As guests sat down at tables on the stage with drinks and dinner, Will Davis, Vice President for External Affairs and CEO of the Foundation, welcomed those in attendance and celebrated the event’s continued growth. 

“I want to first just thank you all for braving this weather,” Davis said, referencing the chilly November evening as the first snow settled into the Southland. “I am pretty sure we’re close to one of the largest crowds we have had for this event.” 

Davis noted that alumni generosity made it possible for students to attend the reception. 

“We have our students here this evening thanks to sponsorships that allow them to be part of this celebration,” he said. “That’s because of you all and your generosity.” 

He also recognized the more than 40 alumni and faculty who served as reviewers for this year’s nominations. 

“Every year this gets tougher,” Davis said. “We had so many outstanding nominations — it’s a great problem to have because it means GovState is making a real difference.” 

Guests were then encouraged to look for students in the crowd, and to connect with them, establishing a relationship and opportunity for mentorship and connection.  

GovState President Joyce Ester, Ph.D., addressed the audience next with gratitude, calling alumni “our best advocates.” 

“You are the best resources we have,” President Ester said. “When I go out into the community and talk about how wonderful GovState is, people expect that — it’s my job. But you all, our alumni, you’re living it.” 

She encouraged alumni to remain engaged with students and academic programs. 

“If there’s an opportunity for you to give back to a student or a department, say yes,” she said. “Our students need you. They need to see what’s possible through you — because that’s how we build the next generation of leaders.” 

President Ester emphasized that the Distinguished Alumni Reception represents more than recognition — it’s a reflection of GovState’s values of access, diversity, and transformation. 

As the evening progressed, 20 alumni and 4 GovState Emeriti were officially inducted as Distinguished Alumni. The impact of this was shared by keynote speaker Angela Sebastian (B.A. ‘'96) and former chair of the GovState Board of Trustees, who reflected on the importance of authenticity and storytelling in leadership. 

“Data engages the mind,” Sebastian said. “But stories engage our hearts. Stories build trust and shared identity — they help people see themselves inside of a shared mission.” 

Encouraging alumni to use their voices to inspire others, Sebastian added: 

“I hope you feel permission to share your story. Somebody needs to hear it. Whether it’s about your time as a student or what you’ve overcome since, your story might be the one that helps someone else see what’s possible.” 

The evening blended ceremony with connection as alumni, faculty and students shared stories, laughter and gratitude. Davis returned to the podium at the close of the evening to thank sponsors, volunteers and attendees for sustaining the GovState legacy. 

“GovState is more than a place — it’s the people,” Davis said. “Tonight, as we celebrate our distinguished alumni, we’re reminded that giving back is how we keep this spirit alive.” 

He invited alumni to remain connected to their alma mater: 

“Give back to GovState — in your time, your talent and your treasure,” he said. “You make this university what it is.”

For the first time in the program's history, Governors State University's (GovState) Women's Cross Country team qualifies for NAIA Nationals. The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) championship meet will be held on November 21 in Tallahassee, Florida.

GovState Head Coach for the men's and women's cross country teams, John Niendorf, said this accomplishment has been years in the making.

“Years of hard work finally paying off for these extraordinary young women! They finally achieved their goal this season and are heading off to Nationals in Tallahassee, Florida,” said Coach Niendorf (pictured far right). “I couldn't be prouder to coach these athletes, and they have made this season a true blessing for us as coaches.”

Expressing his pride in the team, Coach Niendorf commended the team's work ethic and extended gratitude to all supporters.

“They put in all the work and earned the right to be here. The toughness these women showed at conference last Friday to punch their ticket to Tallahassee is truly inspiring to our staff,” said Coach Niendorf. “This is an incredible moment in our program's history. Thank you to everyone for being there with us when we were finishing last in the conference to now.”

Why ADA Compliance Matters in Higher Education

ADA compliance ensures that individuals with disabilities have equal access to educational opportunities, campus services, housing, and activities. It protects the rights of those whose mental, physical, or sensory impairments may limit one or more major life activities such as learning, mobility, or communication. Understanding Disability

A disability is defined as a mental or physical impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities. This includes conditions that are visible or invisible, chronic or temporary, and physical or psychological. Examples include:

Sparking and nurturing creativity through its art and cultural initiatives, Governors State University (GovState) was recently recognized with the Member of the Year Award by Visit Chicago Southland for its outstanding contributions to the organization and the hospitality industry.

“The award tells us that the work we do matters and the unification of our efforts make us a cultural force that is transformative,” said Scott Sowinski, Executive Director of the Center for Performing Arts (the Center). “It feels great that we all had a hand in elevating our community. It also recognizes our amazing teams—it is through them that such an award is possible.”

GovState’s Center for Performing Arts, Nathan Manilow Sculpture Park (theNate), and Chicago Southland International Film Festival (CSIFF) make up an arts hub that offers a variety of creative outlets to the local community and beyond, positioning itself as a continual and consistent cultural destination.

“I think we are a cultural landmark. We have been here a long time and arts and culture sustained for upwards of decades is pretty impressive,” added Sowinski.

Building on the idea of a cultural landmark, Jeff Stevenson, Director and Curator of theNate and Visual Arts Gallery, highlighted the University’s longstanding commitment to supporting and educating area residents and businesses.

“The award recognizes that the leadership at GovState, past and present, understands the importance of not only offering these opportunities to our own students, but also to area schools, residents in our surrounding communities, as well as visitors from around the world,” said Stevenson. “Chicago Southland becomes a destination through what we do here at GovState, in tandem with our area partners and other attractions.”

Sowinski expressed a similar sentiment. “GovState is now more than a hidden gem, it is an outwardly explored iconic representation of art at its best.”

This iconic representation shows through GovState’s “unique cultural and artistic programming and experiences that can’t be found elsewhere in the Southland,” added Josh Young, Director of GovState’s Department of Digital Learning & Media Design and co-founder of CSIFF.

“From our Chicago Southland International Film Festival, which offers the only film screening event of its kind in the south suburban region, to the Nathan Manilow Sculpture Park, which offers a world-class sculptural experience, to the Center for Performing Arts, which hosts theatrical, musical, and educational programming in a facility that rivals theaters in the city, GovState is a hub of arts and culture in the Southland.”

Young says this award is an honor that inspires him and his team to continue bringing diverse cinematic programming to the Southland.

“To know that the Chicago Southland International Film Festival played a part in adding to the rich tapestry offered at Governors State University, thus helping to secure this award, is truly rewarding,” said Young.

In celebration of excellence, experience, and resilience, the Governors State University (GovState) community recently gathered for the annual Honors College (HC) Pinning Ceremony and Dual Degree Program (DDP) Cording Ceremony. 

As the sky darkened into an early fall night, students and family members gathered in the Hall of Honors and Hall of Governors respectively to celebrate both new beginnings, and chapters to close.

Recognizing legacy and innovation, 16 Honors students received pins at the 12^th annual Pinning Ceremony for the GovState Honors College. 

“We hope that for you, this is the start of a great experience in our community of high achieving undergraduate students,” said Honors Academic Program Director Dr. Figen Karadogan. “We hope you will wear the Honors College pin with pride, that it will be a reminder of the journey of excellence you all are on.” 

GovState Provost Beverly Schneller reminded students of the determination that led them to the moment. “You have exceptionality, you’re resilient, and you have the ability to be both creative and practical at the same time. Just remember those four things.” 

While celebrating the new students joining the program, the ceremony also highlighted 10 years of student leadership with the Honors Student Council. Many members of the council were in attendance, including the council chair, Amy Rodriguez. 

Amy expressed her goal to inspire students to be actively engaged in their educational experience, starting with refreshing past traditions to meet current students’ interests. 

“Traditions such as this event keep the Honors College experience alive and well, but that certainly doesn’t mean that the same thing has to happen over and over again,” said Amy, who took honors students on an escape room experience for the honors retreat this year, instead of the usual Chicago daytrip. 

As students received their pins, Dr. Karadogan encouraged them to make the most of their honors journey. 

“Be a part of some of the great opportunities that exist here. You can accomplish them as those before you have,” said Dr. Karadogan. “And as you have ideas for the opportunities of tomorrow, let us know. Because here in honors, the ideas can and do come alive.” 

As Honors closed out, students and family members eagerly moved into the Hall of Governors, decorated for an occasion of academic prosperity with balloons, photo stations, and a stage. Students began their academic journey at one of 17 community college partners, achieved their associate degree, and now begin a journey GovState to earn a bachelor’s degree. With the help of a DDP transfer specialist, students not only transfer to a university seamlessly, but also have the confidence and knowledge of already having had college experience, something GovState President Joyce Ester, PhD, acknowledged in her remarks. 

“You are coming in with a wealth of information, you’re not new to this. You already know what it’s like to study hard, go to an advisor, ask for help, go to the library, ask a cousin or brother to give you a couple dollars for books. You know all of those things. And now you can offer our first year students guidance and leadership.” Dr. Ester encouraged students and then commented on how she herself feels like a dual degree, “Just last year I was a President of a community college, and now I’m President of a University. No matter where you came from at your community college, just like I plan on doing, make Governors State your home.”

With the pride of their families surrounding them, students confidently crossed the stage and received a cord bearing the colors of their respective colleges illuminated against the Governors State background.  

“Now put those cords in a safe place, because in two years you will walk across the Commencement stage with those cords and a second one, representing GovState,” Jessica Specht, Director of DDP said with a smile. “This year is the largest cohort for the dual degree program. As director, I’m very happy to see you here and to have filled the room.”

When the COVID-19 pandemic required the cancelation of in-person classes, Governors State University (GovState) was at the forefront of institutions prepared to transition to online learning.

The technology infrastructure was in place as a result of hard work by the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) (pictured right to left: Annette Keca, Scott Thesen, Thomas Daily, Judith Keigher, Dr. Nikki LaGrone). “Faculty had to scramble during Covid but we were ready to support them,” said Dr. Nikki LaGrone, program director for CTL. Today, CTL continues to anticipate change and implement visionary initiatives that position GovState as a leader in online teaching and learning. Since LaGrone’s arrival at GovState in 2011, CTL has been dedicated to supporting programs and professional development that address emerging technologies, student engagement and success, and federal regulations. 

“Importantly, the relationships we’ve built with faculty allow us to anticipate their needs and provide adequate resources,” LaGrone said. 

For 2025-26, CTL’s six staff members are working on three major initiatives: transitioning to Blackboard Learning Management System; employing the use of Blackboard Ally to address 2026 federal disability accessibility requirements; and implementing and supporting collaborative Communities of Practice (CoP).

Focusing communities around shared goals 

By November, five Communities of Practice will be underway across the University. “Each CoP has a specific topic, focus, goal and /or outcome,” LaGrone explained. “The work becomes very intentional and focused, and the members of the community decide on goals and outcomes.”

Each CoP will share a domain that establishes common ground among the members. They will undertake joint activities, discussions, problem-solving and information sharing. The community members will develop, share and maintain their collective knowledge and build new insights together. 

“CoP’s are not just another meeting or a project with a prepackaged solution,” said LaGrone. “A CoP is a space for collaborative sense-making and emergent learning. This is also a good opportunity for faculty to take a leadership role on campus.”

The Center received a 2025 Institutional Engagement and Excellence (IEE) mini-grant to develop the CoP concept. That funding supported an event to host speaker and consultant Susan Adams, who is a seasoned expert in curriculum, digital learning, data analytics and other relevant topics. 

LaGrone said the communities will come together at the end of this academic year to present their results. 

Below are the CoP topics that will be explored during the 2025-26 academic year. The first three align with Institutional Strategic Framework.

CTL leads rollout of Blackboard Ally and Ultra 

Among the Center’s foremost responsibilities is to support the use of the Blackboard Learning Management System (LMS). LaGrone and her staff are in the midst of two major projects: implementing Blackboard Ultra Learn and Blackboard Ally, which is accessibility software within Blackboard. 

Blackboard Ally offers faculty multiple methods for students to access and download their course materials. Examples of Ally’s features include an immersive reader, searchable scanned documents, e-books, an audio option, electronic braille and translated versions of documents. 

“Blackboard Ally will help us address the upcoming regulations from the ADA,” said LaGrone. “And these regulations also affect our website, email and mobile app.” 

Blackboard Ally will be fully available in all Spring 2026 courses and the national/federal deadline for ADA compliance by the University is April 24, 2026. 

Blackboard Ultra moving toward full implementation

The first step in the multi-year rollout of Blackboard Ultra began during spring 2025, with a pilot program involving 33 courses. 

“Ultra incorporates features like an AI tool and a uniform interface to provide a more consistent learning experience for students,” LaGrone said. “Panopto, a video streaming software, allows faculty to upload video to their courses as well as student presentations.”

Additional faculty are participating during fall semester, with 260 courses underway in Ultra. LaGrone is hopeful that at least 50 percent of faculty will transition during the upcoming spring semester, leading to full implementation in fall 2026. “This a huge project but the benefits will be worth the effort,” said LaGrone. 

Dr. Sara Schnoor, University Lecturer, used Blackboard Learn as a graduate student and wanted to participate as an early adopter of Blackboard Ultra at GovState. She volunteered for the pilot program. 

“I had the opportunity to think more critically about my course design and how Ultra can help me create the best learning experience for our students,” Schnoor said. “Blackboard Ultra is more intuitive and easier to use for faculty and students. The ease of navigating and presentation clarity mean higher levels of engagement. And changes to discussion boards and assessment options increase collaboration and communication between instructor and student.”

With live music, warm food, and raffle prizes, Governors State University (GovState) celebrated all employees at its annual Employee Appreciation event, where grant recipients and employee award winners were recognized.

GovState’s President Joyce C. Ester, Ph.D., welcomed everyone to this year’s event, themed Camp Jaguar, expressing her excitement and crediting all for their work on campus.

“Every institution cannot be successful without the work of the folks that work here, whether you’re faculty, staff, or administrators,” said President Ester. “I really want you all to look around and give yourselves a round of applause and give your colleagues a round of applause.”

This year’s mini grant recipients were announced by Dr. Joi Patterson, Chief of Institutional Engagement and Excellence, followed by the employee awards, which were announced by Dr. Janelle Crowley, Chief of Staff and Head of Strategic Initiatives.

The Institutional Engagement and Excellence (IEE) Mini Grants support innovative projects that strengthen belonging, engagement, and excellence across the campus and beyond.

The Excellence Award recognizes excellence in teaching, performance of primary duties, and creative writing. The Baysore Award, the University’s highest honor, is named for Dr. Gerald C. Baysore, who served as Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs. This award recognizes those who demonstrate absolute integrity, total competence, generous dedication and unfailing civility.

Here at Governors State University (GovState), we pride ourselves on being one of the safest public University campuses in Illinois. Safety is a shared responsibility, and we achieve it by keeping everyone involved. One important way we prepare is by planning for potential active shooter incidents through prevention and response awareness. By promoting vigilance, encouraging timely reporting, and practicing response strategies, we work together to keep our campus safe.

Prevention:

1.     If you See Something, Say Something! Stay vigilant. Trust your instincts. If a person, behavior, or item seems off, don’t ignore it.

2.     Report concerns early. Tips about threats, weapons, stalking, alarming posts, or anything that feels unsafe help prevent incidents. You can report incidents on campus by calling Department of Public Safety x4900, by stopping by in person, or by visiting GovState Policy on Concealed Carry. 

3.     Weapons Policy: Know the Rules! To reduce risk on campus, all firearms must be left in your personal vehicle or checked into the Department of Public Safety. Please see the following Report a Tip or an Incident.

Response 

If Violence Occurs: Run • Hide • Fight

1.     RUN (Evacuate):

·       Leave immediately if you can do so safely.

·       Take others with you.

·       Put distance and cover between you and the threat; call 911 once safe.

2.     HIDE (Barricade):

·       If escape isn’t possible, lock and barricade doors, turn off lights, silence phones, and stay out of sight.

·       Spread out, stay low, and remain quiet.

·       Prepare a plan to move if conditions change.

3.     FIGHT (Defend as a Last Resort):

·       If confronted and your life is in imminent danger, commit to action.

·       Improvise tools, coordinate with others, and disrupt the attacker’s vision, breathing, and balance.

·       Continue until you can escape or help arrives.

Kicking off its 11th year, Governors State University (GovState) Athletics celebrated its Jaguar student athletes with a welcome from University leadership, including the new president Joyce C. Ester, Ph.D.

GovState President Ester led a panel of University departments and campus leaders to welcome over 300 Jaguar athletes at Athletics' annual Success Kickoff.

This year's event also celebrated the past three years of competition in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC)—all record-setting years for GovState Athletics. Some highlights include Coach Tonishea Mack being recognized as CCAC Coach of the Year two years in a row and women's basketball becoming CCAC regular season and tournament champions.

The new pieces bring some new color and inspiration to campus, as well as an opportunity to meet some of the artists at upcoming artists' receptions.

Ready to go “From Here to There” experiencing a dance of color, pattern, and form with art by William J. O'Brien? His exhibition in the Visual Arts Gallery features some of his work spanning drawing, ceramics, textiles, and sculpture—all rooted in a search for identity, connection, and genuine expression. O'Brien draws inspiration from Modernism, spirituality, personal history, and the traditions of Outsider Art.

This exhibition will be on display through November 14 with an artist reception on Sunday, October 12 from 1 – 4 p.m. The event is free and open to all. Click here to register.

In addition to the gallery exhibition, there are three more exhibits around campus. Just around the corner from the Visual Arts Gallery are two exhibits, Jewlya Sturtevant: A Monstrous Flower and Patrick Thompson: Language / Landscape.

Sturtevant invites viewers into vivid, dreamlike worlds where the boundaries between human and nature dissolve. These paintings delve into surreal ecologies and the beautifully strange interplay between the organic and the otherworldly. Sturtevant's work will be on display through November 26.

Using abstraction as both language and landscape, Thompson’s paintings showcase layers of line, form, and color that hint at familiar narratives while resisting fixed interpretation. Thompson's work radiates energy, inviting viewers to pause, feel, and enter a shared space of mystery. His art will be on display through November 11.

Rounding out the trio of artists is Stephen Williams whose exhibit can be found in the Skylight Gallery through October 26. There's an air of mystery to Williams' artistry, so his exhibit, “Poetry in Paintings, Mystery in Things, I am vanishing in the Murmurs” is something that needs to be seen rather than put into words.

Sturtevant’s, Thompson’s, and Williams' work will be celebrated at an artist’s reception and campus walk on Wednesday, October 15 at 3 p.m. starting in the E/F Corridor near the Visual Arts Gallery and then walking to the other locations. Beyond the campus walls, there’s not one, but two new visiting sculptures at the Nathan Manilow Sculpture Park (theNate). Both will be on view through August 2028. 

“Transit Past I” by Andrew Light is a red steel sculpture that presents a visual representation of the individual journey through and beyond the self. One piece is stable and rooted to the ground, while the other is directed beyond the horizon, expressing desires for speed and mobility. 

The opposing components create tension at the heart of the work and are the source of its dynamism, according to Light. This piece can be found near GovState’s West Lot 2.

Just beyond the lake behind GovState, “The Moon, My Shadow, and I” by Gwen Yen Chiu is darkened and welded stainless steel sculpture that brings past to the present, serving as a materialized form of the artist’s deeply rooted personal memory. 

As a child, Chiu read Chinese poetry while learning the language. Revisiting these memories as an adult has brought a renewed sense of understanding of the poems, presenting the concept of thoughts and ideas that are amplified by an echo from childhood, which inspired the sculpture.

Officer Lee Taylor is a soft-spoken and unassuming figure on the campus of Governors State University (GovState). Like any good member of law enforcement, the senior tactical trainer folds himself into the background but can spot a potential threat – and he’s trained to respond, if necessary.

“I'm the eyes and ears - always watching and listening …. I like to say, ‘If you stay ready you don’t have to get ready,’ ’’ said Taylor who later this month will complete a highly selective and elite training program for Illinois first responders. He is of an estimated 50 officers selected from 31,000 across the state who will earn the certification as an Illinois Active Threat Master Instructor. Only a handful of participants represent college campuses in Illinois. 

The program, the first of its kind, is led by Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standard Board and Illinois Tactical Officers Association. Certification required participation in four, week-long training modules to develop specialized tactical skill sets and instructor materials for teaching a comprehensive active threat curriculum. Courses covered multiple scenarios from use of force, active shooter threats to urban action and included high-risk traffic stops, as well as solo officer responses.

As a Master Instructor Taylor said he will be positioned to enhance GovState’s reputation as an area resource. “We could become a hub for training in our area,” he said. “And that could mean increased enrollment in criminal justice programs.”

For first responders to advance in their careers, they often need to complete their bachelor’s degrees. 

Admission to the Masters Instructor program was very selective, focusing on officers who had instructor experience and certifications in firearms training, active threat response protocols, SWAT and rapid deployment.

A Harvey native, Taylor started building his qualifications when he joined the U.S. Army after graduating from Thornton High School. He trained as a combat medic, among other roles, and served until 2001. Taylor joined Illinois Department of Corrections as a tactical officer responding to uprisings at prisons across the state. 

In 2008, Taylor joined the public safety regiment at Governors State where he has amassed an estimated 1,300 hours in trainings to now serve as senior tactical trainer for the department. 

Executive Director of Public Safety James McGee praised Taylor’s contributions to GovState’s reputation as one of safest colleges in the state. “His strong work ethic, sense of calm under pressure, and commitment to continuous learning have made him an invaluable member of our public safety team,” said Chief McGee. 

He added that Taylor's achievement reinforces the department's commitment to a safe and secure university. “The distinction is the result of intentional work—through prevention, preparedness, and training—that involves our officers, students, faculty, and staff,’’ he said. 

With the Master Instruction certification, Taylor looks forward to continuing tactical education courses on campus and across this region. His lessons come with a message. “I want people to know Governors State is a good school where officers are well trained,’’ said Taylor.

A father and a grandfather, Taylor said the certification is the high point of a career that started when he first joined the Army at 17 years old.

“From the beginning until now, I never expected to be here,” he said. “Some people in law enforcement want to make rank, and some people want to create a legacy that will stand the test of time. I want to create a legacy where Governors State officers can handle any situation.”

Jaguars, the next main event at Governors State University (GovState) is sure to be a knockout—Homecoming 2025 Jaguar-Mania is almost here.

Beginning on Sunday, October 26 and running through Saturday, November 1, Jaguar-Mania promises a schedule of events sure to bring out Jaguar pride. From fan-favorite club wars to the annual Family Fun Fair, there’s an event for everyone. Students, faculty, staff, and alumni are all invited to join the fun.

Here are just some of the events to anticipate for Homecoming 2025:

1. Jaguar 5K (Sunday, October 26 at 9 a.m. at GovState’s Main Entrance) – Whether chasing a personal best or enjoying a stroll through campus, this FUNraising event is a chance to be part of something special. Click here for more information and to sign up.

2. Club Wars (Monday, October 27 at 1 p.m. in the Hall of Honors) – Let the battles begin! Join the Center for Student Engagement and Leadership for a round of club wars, the ultimate showdown where campus clubs and organizations compete in fun, high-energy challenges to prove who reigns supreme.

3. Jaguar Culture Fest (Tuesday, October 28 at noon in the Hall of Governors) – This vibrant cultural showcase of food, dance, and art traditions brings together communities from around the world for an immersive experience that delights the senses and connects the soul.

4. Homecoming Bonfire Bash (Wednesday, October 29 at 7 p.m. on the Hall of Governors Patio) – Get ready to light up the night! Join GovState Greek Life for an evening of music, games, and refreshments.

5. Jaguar Mania Pep Rally (Thursday, October 30 at 1 p.m. in the Hall of Governors) – Meet the teams, cheer with the squad, and get loud with fellow Jaguars—it’s time to put the mania in Jaguar-Mania!

6. Nightmare on University Parkway (Friday, October 31 at 10 p.m. in the E-Lounge) – Hang out with the Student Activities Council at their Halloween Party featuring a costume contest and Halloween-themed treats. Come dressed to impress or scare! Doors close at midnight – no re-entry after this time.

Governors State University (GovState) was the perfect backdrop with its expansive skies, and natural landscape as the Nathan Manilow Sculpture Park (theNate) hosted its recent annual Sculpture, Wine & Dine. This year’s theme, The Prairie Party, placed Mary Miss’ iconic earthwork “Field Rotation” (1981) at the center of the celebration, following the piece’s recent artist-led restoration. 

Guests arrived on a warm late-summer evening and began their experience with a guided golf cart tour. Later, a cocktail hour invited visitors to mingle, sip specialty drinks, including a “Miss Garita” featuring a pinwheel garnish inspired by “Field Rotation,” and watch the sun sink over the prairie. Inside the Visual Arts Gallery, the exhibition “Beneath Our Feet” showcased a survey of Miss’ earthworks from the same period as “Field Rotation.” Vintage photographs documented the original construction, carried out by a “ragtag team” of students and volunteers in 1981. Guests also had the rare opportunity to meet Miss in person. 

Speaking to the crowd, Miss reflected on the significance of “Field Rotation” as her first permanent work: “Instead of making a monument, I wanted something integrated into the landscape, something that revealed the land in a different way. The roots of everything I’ve done since are in this work.” Miss also highlighted the role of water in her practice, pointing to the central well in “Field Rotation” as an early example of her ongoing exploration of land-water relationships. “It was hard work every day, all day,” she said, recalling the original construction. “I’m amazed to see, 45 years later, the care that has gone into restoring it.” 

The evening also marked a leadership shift on theNate Advisory Board. Outgoing president Patricia Mell Ragland announced her successor, Tim Brennan. GovState President Joyce Ester, Ph.D praised the event and the sculpture park as a whole: “I really want to thank all of you who have supported the park, financially, emotionally, and through your blood, sweat, and tears. This is an amazing part of our institution.” 

Dinner was then served at Dan Peterman’s “Running Table,” a 100-foot-long outdoor installation that transformed into a communal dining experience. Guests enjoyed a barbecue buffet, breaking away from traditional gala formats to embrace a more relaxed, communal atmosphere. As the evening stretched into night and the stars rose over the prairie, desserts, conversation, and laughter closed out the celebration, reminding guests that beyond the art, theNate is also about community.  

Funds raised during Sculpture, Wine & Dine support ongoing conservation of theNate’s collection, education programs, and public events. With “Field Rotation” restored and a successful Prairie Party behind them, the park looks ahead to another year of blending art, land, and people in unforgettable ways.
