Equity in Higher Education Expert

Dr. Matthew A. Cooney is an Assistant Professor of Education in GSU’s Interdisciplinary Leadership Doctoral Program. His expertise on leadership in colleges and universities, student success initiatives and equity in higher education comes from an active research agenda and spending nearly a decade as an administrator at colleges and universities throughout the country.

Much of Dr. Cooney’s scholarship focuses on college/university presidents and the creation of student success initiatives – particularly around students of color and LGBTQ students – through an anti-deficit framework. In addition to a book chapter on student leadership development, his work has been published in multiple journals and he has presented at a variety of national and international conferences.

Dr. Cooney holds a bachelor’s degree in Spanish Literature from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and a master’s degree in Higher Education Administration from Loyola University, Chicago. He received his Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration from Bowling Green State University in Ohio.
