Governors State University's College of Education renamed
Governors State University’s (GovState) College of Education is now the College of Education and Human Development (CEHD), better reflecting the variety of programs it offers.
In a separate but related rebrand, the CEHD’s Division of Education will now be known as the Division of Education and Leadership. The name of CEHD’s Division of Psychology and Counseling remains the same.
CEHD Dean Shannon Dermer said the rebranding just made sense.
“We needed a name that reflects the depth of our programming,” said Dermer. “Adding Human Development acknowledges the mental health programs we offer and adding “Leadership” to our Division of Education brings awareness to our master’s and doctoral programs.”
When presenting this change to the GovState Board of Trustees, Provost Beverly Schneller noted that the name change was the result of a well-thought-out, consensus driven process. “Everyone in the college had an opportunity to weigh in,” she said. “We expect the new name, which is in alignment with national trends for similarly structured colleges, will attract more students to the excellent programs offered by CEHD.”
The Division of Psychology and Counseling (DPC) offers undergraduate programs in psychology and graduate programs in counseling and clinical and school psychology, along with GovState’s first Ph.D. program in Counselor Education and Supervision…. An Educational Specialist degree in School Psychology and various minors and non-degree certificates round out DPC’s offerings.
The newly named Division of Education and Leadership (DAL) offers undergraduate programs in early childhood and elementary education and graduate programs in early childhood education, educational administration, principal leadership, and multicategory special ed. DAL is also home to a doctoral interdisciplinary leadership program and a wide variety of non-degree certificates and endorsements.
CEHD alumni can be found serving their communities in Pre K-12 schools and mental health centers all across the state. Those interested in a career as a teacher, education administrator, therapist, or counselor, can visit the CEHD website or talk with an advisor.
